Sim card text and calls only no data

Hi,

The joy of children. You inherit their old phones.

I have an iPhone 3G. I use this only for calls and text. Mobile data is turned off. I use the phone very little and therefore just top up when I need to. In other words I don't have a monthly contract. The sim is a Vodaphone sim.

I now have inherited an iPhone 4 and would like to continue to use it in the same way but can't find a pay as you go sim that allows me to top up when I need to. The sim size is a microsim.

I'm not interested in data or any type of a monthly commitment.

Grateful for any guidance and help forum members can give possible sim card suppliers.

Firstly, you can cut your old sim or ask Vodafone to replace it with a micro sim to use it with iPhone 4.

Secondly I don't know any PAYG provider that doesn't allow you to top up when you need to.

Is it unlocked to run on any network ?

As Grumbler points out all PAYG sims allow for topping up but if the phone is locked to a network your choice may be limited without unlocking
It's not just about the money

Sainsburys Mobile may be worth considering as it will work even if the phone is locked to Vodafone.

They have a Double top-up offer this month where they will double your initial credit. This effectively reduces the charges to 4p/min voice & 2p/text (or choose a bundle).
Might be worth trying out a FREE SIM.

Whilst that is currently true, a slight caution should be drawn from what Asda did (moving from Voda to EE, leaving those with Voda locked phones, including some sold by Asda, 'locked out'). I think that vectone also did this twice! (Voda-T-mobile-Voda)

Hard to go past Three for genuinely light users or those who only use more heavily once in a while (with bundles available). Also three like home is a huge benefit for some (especially those visiting the included destinations outside EU/EEA).
Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!

I only use my phone for calls and texts as and when and I would go with three but can't get a good reception here in Bournemouth so I am with Sainsbury and top up with them when they have offers on, such as the double credit that is currently on as Scrounger points out

Thank you all for your advice. Most useful.
    In particular:
    wiogs for the 3 link
Grumbler for the cut up and exchange SIM suggestion
    Scrounger for the Sainsbury link
    smw1948 for the Sainsbury tip.
Some of you asked about whether the phoned was locked. Thankfully it's not.

Thanks for the feedback, just doesn't seem right though - using an iPhone 4 with no data

    You're right Scounger.

Now that the forum has given me leads to true pay as you go SIMS I probably try out the data option.

What I object to is being tied into monthly payment plan irrespective of what I used.

Again thank you for all your help.

You certainly don't need to be tied into any sort of plan should you not wish to be.

Another example - using giffgaff you can change what you pay each month when you buy a goodybag, as they are called, to suit your needs.
