Washing machine needs repairing within 2 years

Our washing machine worked fine before we went on holiday.
Back home, it was completely dead.
We checked the fuse, the socket, nothing made it work.
We've only had it less than 24 months.
It will cost almost £120 to be repaired.
Am I stupidly old-fashioned to expect a washing machine to work for longer than 24 months without needing a repair?
Should I just pay out for the repair, or should I expect it to have worked for longer?
Thanks for reading, and I'd really appreciate your opinions.

You have SOGA rights, but after 2 years you would need to prove that the fault was inherent in order to make a successful claim (against the retailer). To establish that you'd need to get an independent report on the fault, if your claim is accepted then the cost of the report will be refunded too. Whether it's worth doing is something only you can decide. Washing machines are one of the least reliable home appliances so it's possible that for a cheap machine 2 years could be regarded as a reasonable lifetime.0

Next time go to john lewis for best service and 2 yr warranty.
Whate make is it and how much cost? Might be worth getting a new one?
whats the fault and who gave u thd repair quote? Get another quote from a local repairman.0 -
Another couple of questions.
Where did you buy it from and what make is it? (some manufacturers give more than a 1 year warranty).0 -
Hi and thanks for replying everyone, I appreciate it.
The make is an Indesit and we bought it from Curry's.
We don't have much money so we chose as carefully as we could, and are not able to buy another. (We also don't really think it's right, environmentally, that washing machines should be discarded after less than 2 years).
Indesit's customer service has been unhelpful and seems rather rude - standard replies to our genuine queries, being passed on to seven different people in a single phone call, having our email questions answered in 3 curt lines. We won't buy from them again.0 -
You don't have a contract with Indesit, you have the contract with Currys, so that may be why Indesit is not being all that helpful.
Get an independent engineer to do a report on it. If he finds that it is an inherent fault from new, then go back to Currys with the report and say they have to sort it out under SOGA. It is a waste of time dealing with Indesit as you have no redress through them really.
Did you not see the TV program the other week about life of appliances. It was quite remarkable that it seems to be the norm now to design a product which lasts a certain time span, like a printer. They said it had an inbuilt counter which lasted for (say) 10,000 sheets of print then stopped working and unable to repair viably . It is the times we live in. A washer to the average household is a weeks wages today, 30 years ago it was 2 months wages.0 -
Thank you RustyBoy, I really appreciate your help.
Indesit are insisting on charging so I won't be buying their products again.0 -

As rustyboy21 says it's Currys you have a contract with not Indesit. Speak to Currys.0 -
You get what you pay for. Get a miele it will last a life timeDo you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

The Indesit engineer came out and diagnosed a burnt out part of the powerboard. Apparently this happened whilst we were away and the machine was unplugged. They put it down to possible condensation or 'sometimes a slug can pass over it' (!!!). This despite the fact that it was a hot, dry period of weather.
We wrote to Curry's as you suggested. They replied that 'Indesit deal with all of their out of warranty issues and if they do not find the problem to be caused by a Manufacturing fault the repair would have to be paid for.'
Indesit and Curry's are passing us across to each other. Meanwhile, we have a dead machine and some hard-to-believe reasons for it.
What would you all do at this point?
I know it's true that you get what you pay for, but we do not have much money so have to sometimes compromise on what we want versus what we can afford. We understand it can be a false economy, but sometimes we have no choice.

Still do what rustyboy said... Get an independent engineer's report to say the fault is inherent. Then go back to Curry's and ask for a repair/refund/replacement under the Sales of Goods Act.
Nobody has to do anything for you until you get this repair.
You'll have to pay for it though, and if it finds in your favour then Curry's will refund the cost.0
