Vodafone default address

Hi
My husband has tried to top up his pay as you go with Vodafone online. He was unable to top up as the address on his account did not match our address where his debit card is registered to. The address shown on his account is in a town about 18 miles away and we have no connection with that address.
He rang Vodafone who said that when he upgraded his phone some months ago they automatically changed his address to their default address ( which we have discovered is actually a normal residential house) They have changed the address back now, but I was wondering, is this normal practice and why would they do that- can't get any sense whatsoever out of Vodafone!
