Reregistering Sky TV using a fake name

Hello,

My girlfriend recently told me she was in a shopping centre and approached the sky stand(promotional one) and explained she owes sky money has her TV has been cut off from sky because of an unpaid bill. The woman then told her if she registers for Sky again using her middle name and her mums maiden name she will then get the discount(promotional offer) and her unpaid bill will be wiped.

This worries me has I'm sure it's fraud, also the new sky account will be in the same address and same bank account which she used on her previous account in her own name(she told me the woman just said tell them you've recently moved in). I'm guessing the woman works on commission and just seen her coming?

What are the repercussions of this?

Thank you

I'm absolutely certain it's fraudulent too.

More importantly, it's easily caught out as the address and bank account are the same. Do you really think Sky would not close any such obvious loophole? The woman in the shopping centre was just after some commission, just as you suspect.

Why doesn't your girlfriend simply agree to pay the outstanding bill by instalments? Eventually, the bill will be satisfied and Sky may even allow her to re-subscribe.

Thank you for confirmation, and I've no idea. She's not unlawfully inclined, I think she got sucked in by this woman. What would happen if she did get caught? Also, will the unpaid bill remain unpaid? As the sky woman said it would be wiped

Why would it be 'wiped'? The money is still owed by your girlfriend.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Where's the logic, never mind the ethics?

Why should a bill owed by Ms A B Right be wiped if a Ms B Wrong (supposed not to be the same person) takes up a promotional subscription, coincidentally at the same address as Ms A B Right?

Fraud is a very serious offence.

It doesn't matter what the Sky woman apparently said, the bill will remain unpaid until your girlfriend pays it.

You do realise that being "cut off" from Sky services is not the end of the matter?

Sky won't just let it remain unpaid forever; eventually the debt will be sold to a debt collection agency. When the debt defaults it will also destroy your credit rating.
  • In terms of the unpaid debt - sky will get there money eventually. If debt collectors are used, the amount owed could sky rocket. I would strongly recommend getting it paid ASAP as it will, in the long term, save you money.

Just to add, if your girlfriend is still within the minimum contract term then a charge will be added to the bill to cover the cost of the original equipment.

Depending on the circumstances Sky will sometimes reduce some of the arrears if you want to come back so it is worth talking to them rather than risking a fraud prosecution.

If your girlfriend can't pay her existing Sky bills, then why does she want to resubscribe and potentially run up more debt?
