Passport expiry

Please can someone advise me? I was hoping to travel to Norway this month (just for 3 days)- my passport expires 2nd September and I thought as long as I'm back in the UK before it expires that should be ok.

However, I've just read that some countries require you to have 6 months remaining on your passport before you travel. Who do I need to contact to find out if I would be allowed to travel there?

A few countries you do but nowhere in the EU, indeed technically you dont need a passport to go across the EU if you have national ID card to prove you are an EU citizen

If you are a UK or Irish citizen then you don't need a passport to travel across the EU but you still need one for your initial entry into one of the countries that have signed up to the Schengen agreement.

Can anyone confirm that you you can travel (ferry from UK to France) even if your ID card & passport only have a week left before it expires? I'm a Portuguese national traveling home to renew ID card & passport! :-)

Many thanks if anyone can help!
  • Absolutely. No need for anything other than validity on the day of travel within the vast majority of European countries. I think that the only exceptions are Belarus and Russia and possibly Ukraine. The rest? They couldn't care less. Travelling to France, there's a high chance that you won't even be checked, as the French are ridiculously lax when it comes to Schengen border controls.

For what it's worth, national identity cards are more than good enough to access most European countries too, including Serbia, Bosnia and others.

It's worth noting that not all airlines will let you fly without a passport though.

All airlines will accept an EU/EEA/CH issued identity card.

Please don't spread misinformation. I use my Polish identity card on all European travel and not once has it been queried. Why carry a Polish passport (which costs money, unlike our ID card) or an even more expensive British passport when I can carry my Polish ID card.
