  • my son used to like some of my beef stew mashed into sweet potatoes.. or i would make vegetable stew (celery, carrot, parsnip, swede, onion) cooked in chicken/ veg stock until tender. i'd mash this according to his stage and then freeze it in portions, then i could add meat, or beans, or cheese or whatever i had to hand with some pasta or mash potato or sweet potato to ring the changes.. also small portions of bolognaise sauce were always handy as he has always like that..
  • I have a baby food related Question too:

We have just started DD on solids (just organic baby rice at the moment) But I intend on making purees myself in the future.

However, I am still unsure whether to buy all Organic fruit and veg for her purees, or to use [STRIKE]normal[/STRIKE] cheaper veg instead?
In the new year, we are going to try and be very frugal and I am not sure whether I can justify spending so much on organic food.

So, is it worth spending the extra for Organic foods?

    Hi Molly,

It really is down to personal choice. When mine were small there was very little organic produce around so we used 'normal' :D fruit and veg and they have grown up to be strong and healthy.

Nowadays I prefer organic and grow quite a bit myself which is a cheaper option. If you have the time and the space perhaps you could think about that in the spring?

We do try grow what we can, however our garden is rather small, so we are limited to growing in large pots on the patio or on our kitchen windowsill. But we have grown potatoes, tomatoes, onions, herbs, chillies, peppers and carrots (Some more successful than others!) We will definitely be growing some of our own stuff next year.

I have always made up my own baby foods but I am running out of meal ideas.

I gave my little one a jar of apple and pear last night and she was crying most of the night. It wasn't until this morning when it "passed":whistle:that she finally settled down. It was a shop brought one that my SIL left behind.

I have done most of the veg and fruit purees and am looking for proper meals to blend for her. She is 8 months old now but was nealr 2 months early so is 6 months 1 week corrected age.

For an 8month old baby, I would make your usual meals and just add salt or strong spices afterwards. This is what I did for my first baby. I am a bit behind you with my second, we are still on mashed veg/fruit, soft bread, cereals etc :)

  • Hi Everyone

I didnt notice a thread about this and hope i am in the correct section of the site but if anyone out there could help it would be appreciated:)

I have an eight month baby who is currently in the weaning stage. I was doing my shopping online last night and realised adding his baby food and powders to the shop nearly doubled my shop!!

I try to purree apples and carrots as often as i can and i add these to his baby foods (he loves ellas kitchen baby foods which are lovely but expensive)

So i was thinking if i could make a batch of baby foods for him, freeze them then defrost them it would save me quite a bit (I do this with dinners for hubby and me)

So i wanted to know, does anyone know any quick, tasty baby meal recipes that i could do this with and are there any issues in freezing foods for babies?

Obviously, i want to get him eating the meals i make but i dont think curries and chilli con carne would be suitable for him at this stage

any ideas would be appreciated :)

I got Rachel Allen's home cooking book and there are loads in there depending on his age etc. Worth a look as there are loads of gems in the book

  • When my two were babies I pureed down whatever we had - just don't add salt or spicy seasonings. They loved HM cauliflower cheese and Pureed casseroles with mashed potatoes.

have a look on Annabel Karmels website, loads of good balanced meals on there.

My lo favourite was purreed apple, pear and parsnip

sweet potato, butternut squash and lentil.

I also made some broccoli and pea ones and froze them in ice cube trays, I would add these to the sweet potato one now and again to make it different.

i used to freeze them all in ice cube trays, take them out and put meal portions into freezer bags and labelled them, most bags had 3-4 cubes in them. They all froze fine and I just made sure I took them in advance so they were fully defrosted.
