bicarb of soda is the main thingy of carpet cleaning stuff. I think you can scent it with essential oils.

I've used baking soda in the past but it doesn't leave that freshly laundered scent does it :D

I could add oils to it but reckon washing powder is gonna be a winner. I am staying at the ex's this week so will test it on his carpets hahaha :D

Hmm, not sure how well it will work for picking up smells, but for simple freshening it may well work. My main concern is that it won't be easy enough to vacuum up and could leave a mark, so definitely try it under the sofa or something first!

    Hi frugal,

If you like the smell of fresh laundry then this wax tart is to die for. :)yankee candle clean cotton It says they give about eight hours of scent, but I use them until they stop smelling, normally last at least a week of evenings.

I don't know how washing powder would work but this thread may give you some more ideas:

What I've done before is put a little powder, about a tablespoon, in the vacuum cleaner bag. The warmth of the motor releases the fragrance as you vacuum and it eliminates any stale smells that you may get from the dust in the bag.

As a repairer, the times we get vacs in because the motors are clogged up with this stuff is mind boggling.
Not straight away, but over times it ruins them, the particles are so small they can infiltrate any filter.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Resurrecting this thread as I'm thinking about my carpets and was wondering about the washing machine, but this mpost made be think...doesn't dust have different sized particles....some to get through filter some that must clog it?
  • The best thing I've found is Neutradol sachets that you put in the hoover. It's a nice fresh smell but not 'artificial'. They often have them in the 99p/£1 shops so I stock up. It's brilliant at neutralising any doggy smell too.
Be careful of stuff you shake on the carpet if you have pets, it can aggravate their skin.
  • My dog came out in big lumps when I used shake n Vac, she was allergic to it so stopped using it as she looked awful covered in huge hairy lumps! Poor dog.

I use febreeze type spray on the sofa's, makes the room smell nice.

The only thing is I think 99% of the population have leather sofa's so you can't really spray them ( mine are fabric).
