Then what on earth were you doing changing money before you went? Just draw it from an ATM a few euro at a time, then you won't have this problem.consumers_revenge wrote: »Have got a clarity CC0 -
In fairness so many other things going on with kids, packing , etc didn't want the stress of thinking about it before hand. haven't been on hols for 10years now so just wanted the stress taken away by having cash freely available.0

Have got a clarity CC but hard to pay ice cream vendors with that.
Not heading for Rome in the near future then!

PS, The answer is whenever/wherever you spend money,
CHECK THE PRICE FIRSTTurning left avoids some of the idiots (only some)0 -
I can understand people needing to convert remaining Euros to Sterling but, as others have said, if you don't have to then hang on to them. You lose about 20% of the value in the banks / Bureau de Change and it's not likely that the exchange rate will vary that much by next year.0

That an exaggeration. If he bought at 1.2333 three weeks ago and sold at 1.3333 at the local place shown in my link, that's closer to 8%.
Better to not buy a wad of foreign currency if the first place, unless speculating.0 -
Much easier to budget so that you dont have any left over by using it to withdraw what you need
i always keep hold of any leftovers its much cheaper than any other method if money isnt neededCan you really budget that closely? I can't
Surely budgeting how much cash you need is exactly the same as you'd do at home. We're talking here about the Eurozone where they have banks and ATMs and accept cards!
When I'm at home I don't draw out wads of cash in case I might need it. I pay for small items with cash and replenish as necessary. Larger items I put on a card and pay it off at the end of the month. Unless I'm going somewhere really isolated I do exactly the same on holiday.
Unlike OP, I travel a lot so always keep anything left over for next time.0
