What's Dagenham like?

OH works in London and we are looking at moving closer (at present live near Chelmsford). We are renting and do not want to pay more than £850 a month.

Any other areas anyone can recommend? We have to have a house as we have a large dog and 2 cats.

In my opinion not very nice, especially compared to Chelmsford. Unfortunately as I'm sure you are aware it gets very pricey the closer you get to London. I'm sure someone can advice you better as I've not lived round there for many years.

Dagenham has gone downhill over the last few years. It is like one big council estate. If you could afford it, Hornchurch or Romford would be a better bet. Romford has a 30 min rail journey into Liverpool Street as well.

I live in Hornchurch and am very happy where I am. Avoid Dagenham like the plague. You can get some nice places in Hornchurch for £850 and it is very convenient having access to mainline to Liverpool Street and District line, depending where in Hornchurch you are.

I live in Leytonstone and 850 for a 2 bed gardne flat is about the norm round here. Very nice it is too.

I dont know huge amoujt about dagenham but i know that street violence and racism is reported to be quite rife

Never been to Dagenham but the Essex lot I've worked with (and there a lot of them in The City) all sneer at it. Romford too.

Houses in Dagenham are bloody cheap, it is not a nice area.

You will proably find that your biggest restriction on the rental property is your pets, not your cost.

Where do you and your other half work? Best to stay near the same tube line as your job otherwise commuting can be a real pain.

my dads family lived there when the estate was built and still do what a hell hole it is now rent some where else there must be better for that money.

must say I agree live in essex moved here from further south have visited dagemham 4 times for youth football and would not live there if they were giving houses away free!!! why not try horndon, chafford 100 upminster all pretty much on the main trainlines for commuting..

Comparing Dagenham to Chelmsford is like chalk and cheese. You seriously would feel like you had made a bum move there. Best to look around the areas of Romford and Hornchurch as already mentioned. These are both very large towns so will cater to all tastes and expense.

Oh and Generali, those people that sneer at Romford (amongst other places) are probably the ones that visit the pubs and clubs on a Friday and Saturday night and make a disgrace of themselves so please, don't criticise Romford for the people it unfortunately attracts.
