Oil change

Hi,

I want to get the oil and filter changed on my car. Does anyone know of any deals at the Kwikfit-type chains? And how much is fair (96 Peugeot 496 diesel)?

Thanks all

  • I wouldn't let Krap-Fit, or any of their ilk, change the oil in our deep fat fryer.

I think my local kwik-fit charge £69 for an oil change. The cheapest way to do it IMO is to do it yourself. £20 for 5L of oil and <£10 for the filter.

Takes me about half an hour and costs less than £30. Drive car to warm it then jack it up (supporting properly), unscrew sump drain plug and let it empty into suitable container (halfords do these for about £7). Renew oil filter, fill up with new oil - job done.

No doubt there'll be replies saying it isn't worth the hassle and there may be places you can get it done for £50ish including oil and filter but personally, I'd rather have the extra £20-30 quid in my own pocket...

Me too - and the certain knowledge that it's been done properly using the right parts, tools, and skill.

Personally I would also go the DIY route, at the moment at ECP you'll probably get the oil and filter for around £20 the pair.

However if you don't wish to go that route National Tyres have 10% discount coupon on their website, but you will need to input the car registration number to get a quote.

The chains, eg kwik-fit, ATS, National, Halfords Autocentres etc are perfectly capable of doing a decent job of an oil change as long as you're prepared to resist the upselling on shockers, tyres, brakes etc, if you can't/don't fancy it yourself. Even better, your local independent garage if you have one.

You forgot to add the price of a decent jack, axle stands, sump plug socket, filter housing socket if it's not a spin on type, and torque wrench onto that.

Indeed, but as I do my own servicing and maintenance every year and save a fortune, it's worth the investment. :D

Possibly the op doesn't have them already though.

In the past I always did oil changes myself but don't have the a driveway to use now plus all my kit is in storage.

With National Tyres an oil and filter is about 32 quid with their 10% offer so I think I'll go for that, unless anyone knows of a better deal....?

Indeed, but 'investment' was the keyword. If you never do any work on your own car it's going to cost an absolute fortune in rip-offs over the years. Start off with oil changes and there's also a lot of satisfaction and further savings to be had in sorting out your own maintenance.
