I can't put a number on it but have seen people qualify for the SG with 0 points under the exceptional circumstance descriptors. I am not aware of anyone that has been awarded 15 points but not been awarded ESA, that is not to say they do not exist though.

The law says they don't exist (assuming they meet the contribution or income conditions)
If you have been awarded 15 points by the decisionmaker - ATOS does not do this - you are either in the work-related, or support group if you meet those additional descriptors.

When i received my ftf questionnaire that ATOS Dr filled in at my f2f it was the Dr that had ticked the boxes to say how many points I got.

    No, they didn't.

They gave their opinion as to what descriptors you fit.
The decisionmaker then makes the decision on if you actually do match those, and can change up or down the actual figure found.

Yes the Dr ticks the various boxes but, in theory at least, it is the ESA Decision Maker (DM) who has the final say. It would be very unusual for the DM to reduce the points assessment of the Dr, but it is not unknown for the DM to increase the points. This would generally be done after discussion with the claimant.
Just to clarify one thing though. The heading for the topic is When does ESA pay double - it doesn't. The WRAG or SG element adds about £30 to the rate.

It can be more than double though if you're under 25, in the support group and receive the enhanced disability premium top up.

True, but simply going into WRAG or SG won't result in a doubling of the money.

I don't think age is a consideration my dd was put into the support group when she was 16 yrs old and has been getting £123 a week since then.

  • Under 25 assessment rate = £57.35/week.
once a positive ESA decision is made for wrag/support, then that elemt goes upto £72.40/week + either £28.75 or £35.75 & if on income related there could be at least £15.55 more.
