As MSE is partly responsible for more money lessons being on the curriculum next term (yay!) we're thinking of holding a webcast for teachers on Monday 1 September.
The idea is teachers can live ask Martin a question (via the forum, email etc.) and he'll give answers that hopefully inspire confidence in how fun finance can be
Our questions (mainly for secondary teachers but maybe the same applies to primary?) are:
* Is Monday 1 September a teaching or inset day at your school?
* Is the day already full of tasks/training/very important things?
* Would a webcast count as something you're allowed to do on an inset day?
* Would you want to spend half an hour watching one if you were teaching financial education next term?
* Would it be better to do during the holidays or is that the last thing you'd want to do with your precious time off?
Any tips much appreciated!

Perhaps Martin could ask them how much they think others financially lose when we have to take a day off as the teachers are striking ?Am the proud holder of an Honours Degree

I'm a secondary science teacher and Faculty Director of my department.
Our INSET Day is September 4th and we already have an agenda for the day. I know we don't have any spare time on the day. A webcast could be organised for future INSETS and could be done in the free training time that departments are often given, this would be the best option as the webcast could be done with the relevant staff that will teach Class Lessons (these teachers already touch on finance with their pupils).
I'd imagine organising this for the start of September would be to short notice for most schools.0 -
* Is Monday 1 September a teaching or inset day at your school?
Inset day though Year 12 are at school for induction.
* Is the day already full of tasks/training/very important things?
Yes. These days are planned months in advance.
* Would a webcast count as something you're allowed to do on an inset day?
Possibly, yes. Whether or not one would work on our school's ancient and rubbish internet is another matter!
* Would you want to spend half an hour watching one if you were teaching financial education next term?
Maybe, depending on what other opportunities I had already had to prepare to teach it.
* Would it be better to do during the holidays or is that the last thing you'd want to do with your precious time off?
I'd prefer to have it in the holidays. 1st September is too late - I'd be a bit worried if I was going in to school in September having no idea what I was teaching yet!
Btw, do you know how this new financial education is actually being implemented in schools? As far as I am aware, nothing is changing next year in my school's curriculum to incorporate it.0 -
* Is Monday 1 September a teaching or inset day at your school?
No, our first day back is Tuesday 2nd September.
* Is the day already full of tasks/training/very important things?
N/A
* Would a webcast count as something you're allowed to do on an inset day? Yes
* Would you want to spend half an hour watching one if you were teaching financial education next term? Yes
* Would it be better to do during the holidays or is that the last thing you'd want to do with your precious time off? For me it would work best as something I could look at in my own time, possibly with a forum, even if it wasn't live,0 -
Monday 1st Sept is an inset which is already planned so unfortunately there wouldn't be any time for a webcast - although it is the kind of thing we would be allowed to do.
If we were teaching financial ed, then yes I would be up for watching it - but I agree with supersaver that it's short notice - so I would prefer to be it in hols to make sure I was organised!:rotfl:0 -
Secondary science teacher.
Inset is 1st September and the entire day is already planned out.
We have staff training sessions we have to attend throughout the year, so this would best be encorpoated into one of those.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
September 1st is an inset day, and we gave a full agenda of planning, prepping and training.0
-
Thanks everyone - super useful info.
Would an early evening slot be a good time to hold the webcast do you think? Say 5pm - 5.30pm?

* Is Monday 1 September a teaching or inset day at your school? It's a normal school day in Scotland - most go back mid-August. Also a normal school day in Leicestershire - term starts on Thurs 28th August
* Is the day already full of tasks/training/very important things? Programme for Inset days are set before the end of term - yes they are full of important stuff like exam results updates, safeguarding training, new software updates/training, planning & preparation, and much more etc
* Would a webcast count as something you're allowed to do on an inset day? Yes - but webcasts are usually for a very small group not a large group. People would need to be able to test internet connections etc
* Would you want to spend half an hour watching one if you were teaching financial education next term? I guess that financial education come into citizenship? Without knowing what the content of the webcast is, it's difficult to say if it would be a valuable 30 mins - gut feeling is that it would probably be not worth the time investment at this point in the year. By 1st September, teachers will have already done lesson plans & should know what they are planning to teach & how they will teach it next term ...
* Would it be better to do during the holidays or is that the last thing you'd want to do with your precious time off?
Most teachers wouldn't want to give up their holidays, but offering it 3 or 4 times would be best - a day time slot, a twilight slot (say 4/4:30pm), a holiday slot etc0 -
I would personally say that is too late - at the end of a busy day the last thing you want to look at is something new! Can it not be pre recorded then accessed as and when?:rotfl:0
