Where's my sound gone?

I have a monitor with integrated speakers and the only sound I can now hear is the screeching when I dial-up. All other sound - start up, shut down and all other default sounds, e-mail notification, sounds on games - have disappeared.
I have gone to Sounds & Audio Devices and under "Volume" volume is set to almost high, speaker setting is set on monitor stereo speakers, under "Sounds" it's set to Windows Default and the volume icon on the task bar is set to almost high as well.
I did wonder whether the speakers have died on me but would I hear the dial up screech in that case?
Would appreciate your thoughts.

Hi i would start by checking what updates you have downloaded since you lost the sound. Also check the driver in system properties - maybe needs reinstalling / updating
let me know0 -
I'd imagine you have already tried rebooting? It solved my problemo0

No updates have been done.
Now I'm showing my ignorance - how do I check the driver in system properties?
Thanks.0 -

Yes - rebooted. Sound disappeared weeks ago and it was only because my grandson wanted to play a game and he missed the sound that I thought I ought to try to get it fixed

Check that your media player is not on mute0

Check that your media player is not on mute
:embarasse Where do I find the media player?
And I don't know if this is relevant - I don't want to play any CDs or DVDs, just get my default sounds back and the sound on games such as Spider Solitaire (came with computer) and MahJong (from CD rom).
And do you know why I get the dial up screech but no other sounds?0 -
Have you checked that the cable connecting the screen to the processor hasn't come loose. My children have a habit of managing to kick the cable. Also check the volume button on the monitor, some monitors go to mute when both volume buttons are pressed.0

Thanks for replying Sweetpickle. Yup - have checked cables, all OK and volume button is up almost to the top.
Can somebody tell me, if the dial up screech is sounding does that mean the speakers are actually working and the problem is lying somewhere else?0 -
no, dialup noise comes from the modem
if you have any headphones, try plugging them into the soundcard, to rule in/out your speakers.
also, start, run, devmgmt.msc
see if there any yellow question marks, which would indicate a driver or hardware problem.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Thank you, I'm glad that's cleared up then!

Not sure if we've still got any that work - will have to check. If we have, how do I plug them into the soundcard?

So sorry, you really are dealing with a thickie here when it comes to the technical side of computers. Does my answer to the next bit cover this?

I've got to the Device Manager - Hardware by right clicking on My Computer and there are no yellow question marks showing up.
Thanks Albertross.0
