Switching to EE can cause a long phone outage

Others may wish to know that switching broadband and landline to EE can cause a loss of normal phone service for several hours.
Broadband worked very quickly after the transfer from TalkTalk but my phone number was changed without permission resulting in loss of incoming calls. Also the distortion was such that it would have been difficult to make an emergency call.
After complaining EE said that they expected to give me back my normal number by midnight.
Why should I be without a normal phone service without any warning for about 12 hours?
Earlier transfers between providers were all completed within a few minutes.
