Its a bit of hair gel!

He wants to style his hair like his friends, I really don't have a problem with that. There are plenty of things his friends are allowed that he is not (some for example are allowed to play video games above their age level - he is not allowed these). As a parent I like to 'pick my battles' I can't refuse him everything his friends do, that would be cruel on the other hand I don't let him do everything they do either as some of the things I feel are age inappropriate but wearing a bit of hair gel is not one of them.

I also think this is a phase he will forget about it, probably by the time the holidays are over.

In the mean time I will be buying a stronger gel, one of the recommended ones on here and if that makes me a bad parent then thats something I will have to live with!

That's the problem these days, parental discipline is equated with child cruelty.

I realise that it's no big deal but where do you stop - fake tans for 7 year olds, make up, tarty clothes? What happens when they're 11/12 and want to go on dates or 14/15 and they want to go clubbing. There'll always be some idiot parents who allow these things, it doesn't mean that more sensible ones, like you, have to go along with it.

I'm used to threads going OTT but honestly over hair gel??!!:rotfl:. It's not like she was thinking of getting him a tattoo or a lip piercing, it's something that will wash out!

There is a kids hair gel out, or used to be as a vaguely remember my son having it for a while, vosene maybe? It might work ok on flyaway hair.

I remember my brother and all his little mates having hedgehog spiked hair in the 80's and early 90's - it is not a new thing!

My DS10 likes the very short at the sides and messed up on the top look - I buy him the Fructus Manga head putty, which is less then £2 from Body Care.

I prefer the styled look, to 'lego hair.'

That's what they have parents for - to protect them from creaping consumerism, not to go along with it!

Wish a bit of an OTT reaction! It could be images if a footballer, why would we need to protect them from that!

Hair gel is a personal care item, no different to other hair products or body products such as deodorant, body sprays etc!

I think perhaps you are being facetious because there really is no issue here with this topic.

I never thought I'd see anything worse than mumsnet. Parenting threads in here are becoming a joke. Anyone would think the child had asked for a tattoo and a Prince Albert piercing.

    Happy moneysaving all.

This is good, very strong stuff :) It's cheaper at somewhere like Home bargains or B and M's than at a supermarket.
