Prescription: Can you tick IS if you get ESA?

I have a question, a friend of mine went to the hospital recently, he is on ESA (IR), but for his NHS prescription which can only be dispensed by the hospital, has no box to tick for ESA, it has IS, and JSA. I think they've just not bothered to update the prescriptions since ESA has come into effect, unless I'm mistaken. I don't understand why there would be no box to tick for ESA.

Does anyone have any ideas? Can he just tick the JSA or IS box instead? or should he make his own box with ESA and tick that - don't know if the pharmacist will dispense if he makes his own box. Abit of a gray area.

  • On normal scripts box H is 4 ESA, but you must be on income related not contributions type.

Yes he is on income related. I'm kind of fed up with this guy honestly, he suffers mental health issues panic attacks, anxiety etc, he called me from the hospital, in a panic not knowing what to do. He just ended up coming home without even collecting his medication, which he seriously needs. So Monday I have to tag along with him to sort this out for him. I'm a law student and if I was in his situation I would have just ticked the IS box and not even thought about it, how can someone be so afraid is beyond me. I was telling him to tick the IS box, but he was still scared, he said: "It might be illegal" I nearly fell off my chair. What an idiot.

Perhaps because he has mental health problems? It's not him I would be calling an idiot ...

It's the sort of thing that can stymie me when I am anxious.

    The guy had three choices:

    1. Tick the IS box (I can understand why he did not want to do this if he wasn't sure).
    2. Pay for his prescription (may not have had enough money).
    3. Come home and ask someone to help him. What a shame he didn't pick someone more sympathetic. Try and have a bit of understanding.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Me I'd have ticked IS & added ESA to that line, but then I don;t currently have MH problems.

if he had cancer would you be saying the same thingor is it just because he has issues with his mental health.
id suggest that he finds himself a 'real' friend rather than one that slates him behimd his back!

Sorry, yeah you guys are right. I was frustrated had a headache and talking nonsense. He is already seeing MIND he sees a psychotherapist, they had him on CBT, but he seemed to know more about it then the expert, well he did study psychology so now he is seeing a psychologist. Seen some improvements with him, I wish he gets better though. Otherwise I suspect his mrs might leave him because she's very flirty even with me, and once tried it on. Tried to get me drunk on wine, and stay over longer it was evident. But I don't know I just got that feeling. But I don't mess with married women.

Actually, come to think of it he might have marital problems which he hasn't told me about, because I suspect there is more going on at home. It could be they might be having a breakup and he is depressed and down about that. I mean that could explain why she seems pretty flirty with alot of guys. But I could just have the wrong end of the stick.

Anyway, I've told his father about it, he said he will take him on Monday, since I am going to be working, they said they'll take care of him. And asked me to come round for dinner tomorrow, but I politely declined.
  • Hi All

May be missing the point here, so please forgive me,
I would advise to take it to the dispensing chemist ( ie hospital pharmacy ) and ask them which box is the appropriate one to tick.

Hope nobody minds me mentioning this:o
  • Yes of course Supergran, that is another option.

But you don't always think straight when you have MH problems :)

I'm sure on either the JSA or IS box, it does mention ESA too.
