Eric Pickles puts his weight behind the Daily Mail Campaign - Saturday's edition!

A lot of ill informed tosh is being sprouted here. How many foreign registered cars a day do you see on the streets of Darlington and Doncaster? Unless you live in Kensington and Chelsea foreign registered plates are not at all common.
Also, park your car inappropriately in Spain, and you will be fined a few Euros. None of this is a problem.
What is a problem is that Trading Standards are not pro-active enough. Most of the PPC Charges are a deceit, they trade on the ignorance and gullibility of the great unwashed public.
It should be compulsory for PCNs to carry a health warning such as "this is not a police or council ticket, and is issued for an alleged breach of contract under civil law"
With respect to Mr. Pickles, who may be a nice bloke, I do not think that his support carries a lot of weight, he has not be on the winning side in most of the issue which he has supported up until now, and, in my opinion, is where he is to counterbalance the toss, a sort of John Prescott figure. You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0 -
I'll believe government action when I see it. If they really wanted to they could sort it out overnight by getting the DVLA to clean up its act.Je suis Charlie.0

For those who have kicked up about the Daily Mail campaign, would they rather they had done nothing? Anything that gets a head of steam going to get some changes is welcome.
And as far as POFA being passed on this government's watch, as someone who had their car clamped only once, I welcome POFA and some, imperfect though it may be, regulation that drove the really vicious thugs out of business.
So, instead of knocking the Mail (and Eric Pickles who, as far as I last read, is getting Council camera cars banned in the autumn) try being a bit more positive and hope that the message about these "fake fines" gets to a much wider audience.0 -
They've been talking on Bbc Breakfast this morning about parking fines. Councils all over the Country are losing out thousands of pounds every year 'cos of foriegn drivers who get tickets but can't be traced afterwards. They're allowed to be in the Uk for up to 6mths without registering their vehicles.
I was wondering does that work in reverse ? If i were to go to Spain; France, or Germany could i getaway with fines i pickup there.
There is a reciprocal agreement so in theory no - but in practice - yes, lots of Brits abroad escape paying.
Same with Ireland - including tolls - but then many folks do not seem to view Ireland as 'foreign' at all.0 -

I agree GD - a couple of weeks ago we'd have all been salivating at the prospect of a national newspaper (of whatever 'colour') giving the subject of the PPC/PCN scandal the number of column inches this has received for the past week.
Let's see where it takes us before anyone piles in with negatives! Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

In my view today's article was a powerful one, exposing what these disgusting parasites actually do with the money they cream off the unsuspecting public they inflict hardship and fear on!
Mr. Pickles has not been very effective in the past though, his bin campaign was pretty ineffective, let's hope he does better with this!0 -
Whilst the coverage is welcome, it could be improved with a simple "How to appeal to POPLA and win" guide.
I'm also glad that Mr Pickles is taking an interest in the matter but he has a long record or spouting fine words but not doing anything.
HMG could cut the number of problems with the industry by requiring those who have access to the DVLA database to be directly regulated by the DVLA with 'fines' for those who access it inappropriately.Je suis Charlie0 -
