Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop L830-17T Windows 8.1 Upgrade Failure

Hi
Can anyone help or give advice on this? I purchased a Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop L830-17T on 18.4.14 for my son's birthday on 25.7.14. He was initially delighted with the present when he opened it last week (it had been boxed until then). We spent all day yesterday trying to upgrade it from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1. All the upgrade files (104) seemed to download OK but when the laptop tried to reboot we receive the error message 'Failure configuring Windows features reverting changes' fixed on screen. We have since tried to boot the laptop into safe mode without success. The laptop does not have a DVD/CD drive and no recovery discs were included with the laptop. As you can imagine this has been the worst birthday present I have ever bought.
I've just phoned up Tesco technical support who automatically re-direct you direct to Toshiba technical support. They wanted £35 for helping fix what they are calling a software problem not a technical problem. Can anyone offer any help or advice how I can return this 3 month old laptop to Tesco?
Thanks
Allan

Cannot see Tesco taking a product back that you broke via a Microsoft update .
Does the laptop boot to the BIOS screen ??
If so check it boots from the HD first .0 -
This is actually quite common when updating 8 to 8.1 at the moment, I have had to do a batch of 40 of them recently (yes over 4GB download each) and they have all done. Previously I have never had this problem so I assume there is an odd update that causes an issue.
Anywho, to get around it simply let it revert (it may take 30-60 minutes depending on how many it did) and then run Windows update again and it will work fine. In the end once I figured out it was happening every time I did an initial 20 updates, let if fail, revert and then ran the 100+ again and it worked.
Just have patience, let the revert run and then update again and it will work. Even if it takes an hour just let it do its thing.
I had a similar issue with Windows 7 as it got older, a vanilla build would struggle to update at first due to all that was available.
Also arn't OEM supposed to provide you with the first years support for the OS or am I imagining that?
EDIT: Oddly one or two of the 40 although they did the revert actually installed the updates and let me move to 8.1 on next boot so check the store once it is back up as you may get lucky.0 -
Did you follow the Toshiba Support Guide?
Excerpt:Part II: Things to Do Before Updating to Windows 8.1

I guess that you skipped most of those steps.0 -
Irrelevant Nifty, this isn't the Windows 8.1 update that is failing, this is the initial Windows update that you have to perform before it will even off you Windows 8.1 on the store. The fact that there we 104 update files proves that, Windows 8.1 is a single 3.5GB(ish) file that you grab from the store but you cannot do it before you have updated Windows 8 completely in Windows Update.
Like I said before, let it revert and then run again, it will work and this seems to be common with vanilla Windows 8 at the moment.0 -
It takes time from strating Win 8 to being able to install 8.1. The computer will warn you and count down. Then it will let you reboot and after accepting T and Cs will uninstall some programs (preparing the system) get everything ready and then invite yopu to visit the store to install. I did mine overnight as it does take a while. Just let it run its course0

Certainly not irrelevant. The OP speaks of not having Recovery Media. It's the first thing that you should do.
In fact I put in my reply but then took it out again, as I was sure that he did not.0 -
Hi
I had the same issue with a new Asus laptop last night 101 updates ,nearly all failed and took an age reverting.
I did manage to download and update a few this morning before work so will try some more in smaller blocks later.0 -
Once you are up and running....some more RAM0

Hi Everyone
Firstly thanks for your responses. It's a really good feeling not to be alone and to have people who can and will help.
Good call OGR, you're a star! I just switched it on and after about 55 minutes the system reverted back to 8.0. To think that Toshiba wanted to charge me £35 to revert it back to the original operating system.
You're right I NiftyDigits, I handed the computer immediately over to my son. We are going to backup everything tomorrow morning and follow the instructions before trying again.
Thanks Bollotom, we'll give it plenty of time when we try again to upgrade next time.
I'll let everyone know how we get on, have a great weekend folks!

Hi NiftyDigits, I managed to get one of the ones that Tesco were selling after they had upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 6GB. Hopefully this will be enough.
I'll let you know how we get on
