  • Plenty of time .

They will go red or yellow like some of mine.

    Patience on this one.

    Why ?
The tomato will taste better if left on the plant until the correct time, which will be in the next few weeks. Taking the tomato off and forcing it , shows impatience and results in a inferior crop.

He's been dead nearly 20 years so things might have changed. (I don't eat tomatoes so no expert.) Just remember him doing it, and as we had to travel hundreds of miles to see them it was always the summer holidays.

Maybe an old wives tale...but...I'm told if you put a red apple next to the tomato plants...?

It exposes them to the sun a bit more. Mt first tomato this year was a beefsteak one (Marmande I think) and since then some small orange ones from Lidl? seeds. I've masses of green Marmande though, but it's early days and I quite like green tomato chutney...

Partly why i turned to cherry tomatoes. Even my spindly pathetic weedy tomato plant that i forgot about has had a small bunch or lovely sweet red toms.

About 2 or 3 years back i had a load of toms that didnt ripen. Green tomato soup just didnt look right :)

Now is it sun OR time and warmth that ripens a tomato.
My green house is a bit too wild for my liking ( went on my hols) and my few red toms are /were well hidden so I suggest we need time and warmth rather than sun.
I strip lower leaves to allow greater air flow. stops blight , do not get the leaves wet only water at ground level.

A couple of years ago I had 5 or six trays of unripened toms when the weather turned at the end of the season, all were placed on top of the kitchen units and all with the exception of about 6 ripened fully red. Again don't worry.

Myself I plant seed the 1st few days of Feb in an attempt to avoid the above, I/ probably 1/2 way through picking what has been a bumper crop this year. As early as possible would be my advice, but for now just wait.

Just noticed you say you've fed them "a few times"? I feed every 3 days when the 1st toms set.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
