People (rightly) blame the government, but when MPs do speak out as Margaret Hodge MP and others have done (https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/boycotts/boycottamazon/imboycottingamazon/margarethodgeinterview.aspx), people on here defend big business.

There needs to be some political momentum, and I hope it is an issue at the next election. We deserve good public services such as health, eduation, social care, police etc. and the burden of paying for that should be with big business as well as working people.

I haven't read critisism of British company John Lewis.

    According to the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22549434):

"Amazon.co.uk is thought to have classified itself as a service provider to its Luxembourg business, Amazon EU Sarl, in order to reduce its tax bill. Its UK business employed 4,200 people at the end of 2012, compared with 380 in Luxembourg. The £2.4m tax bill was just below the £2.5m aid it received from the Scottish government last year to expand its warehouse operations in Dunfermline and Gourock."

Are you incapable of thinking for yourself, or do you rely on the media for all your opinions?

More great service from Amazon today - ordered a Chromecast at 6.30pm last night, delivered (free) half an hour ago. How can anyone criticise that?

Mostly their customer service is great, but it has been slipping. I ordered 2 of the same item by mistake (I do admit it was my mistake!) and they used to be so good at taking things back but they said as it was my mistake I'd have to pay shipping.. I always thought there was a free returns policy which meant I was really happy to buy things there but seems its not the case any more. for the record though, I did several on line chats and argued I was a good and loyal customer and they waived the charge, this once ;)

I think its not good they don't pay tax, but I think ALL multinational companies do this. Sadly I don't think the issue can be fixed by just our govenment as it needs a global change, it does work in our advantage too (see the recent AstraZeneca/Pfizer issue) as actually our tax is relatively low.

So in your case they didn't do a thing wrong, you misunderstood their returns policy, but they waived the charge anyway? That strikes me as excellent customer service, most retailers would have told you where to go ;)

It's evidence based opinion, including watching the Public Accounts Select Committee proceedings.

John Lewis charge the same price as Amazon for a Chromecast, and include a 2 year guarantee. Free to collect in store or £3 postage. A British company, paying tax, and giving a share of their annual profits to workers to spend in the UK economy, helping us all.
  • Amazon gave me a full refund for out of warranty Xbox 360 as they did not have matte version in stock, I was delighted at how efficient they were.
I would have been happy with a partial refund as I would still be able to replace unit due to price decrease.

And most retailers would lose out on the average £600 spent on Amazon yearly. There's a reason shops should go above and beyond to deliver great customer service -- it's just good for business.

True, I can just about remember people bartering in shops for discounts yet the amount of times I hear younger people complain about how they work in shops and people ask them for discounts and they should realise prices are set and NO ONE can change the,

Of course they can, its just that nowadays only supervisors can as in the past people were giving friends discounts on things so losing companies money, I remember going to a second hand shop in 2001 and wanting a video recorder and a Sony one which was a recent model and had 4 heads, stereo etc was marked at £90 and I got it down to £30 by saying I was interested but I wanted to see other ones as didnt have that much, I even remember when I bought my PS2 from Game Argos had it with 1 game and memory card for £250 and I got 2 games and a memory card(and the games I picked were the £60 ones with light guns) and they even gave me a extended warranty! Compare that to last year when I wanted a 3DS I went to local Game and said it was £10 cheaper at Gamestation who they also own and could they do it for the SAME price and was refused.
