Just had a text from my daughters who have just arrived in Tokyo on a Air France flight, to say that they have just been told that their luggage is still in Paris because they didn't have enough room on the plane for it! great start to their holiday!

At least Air France know where it is and will be getting it to them.
Thankfully never happened to me but a friend did get a call a few years ago when his bag didnt turn up saying they think it may be in Australia or possibly India. There was almost daily calls after that suggesting other places in the world that they thought it may be at before they finally saying it wasnt going to be found.0 -

yep it happens
has happened to me twice over the years.
A 2 hour wait in airport for next flight once
A 24 hour wait in resort once.
Last year my case got wrecked on the return flight after we got bumped off one of the outbound flights

Rather than hanging around the airport, they can ask AF to deliver it to wherever they are staying. In some ways a bonus if it is heavy.
AF will reimburse the cost of essential purchases up to about fifty pounds (the details are on the web page, but hidden).0
