    You missed my point, nobby.

I did not confirm or deny I had a pension - what intrigues me is what a pension has to do with this thread.

    Age. Life moves on.

I bought a part worn Michelin tyre last summer from a back street garage that are always advertising part worn tyres. It was practically new with 7-8mm tread still on it and it costed me £20 fitted cash, wasn't given a receipt.

Got home and noticed a big chuck taken out the side of the tread pattern on the edge of the tyre. Obviously hadn't been checked over properly before being sent to the 'part worn' market.

At the time I could have got a budget new tyre from a trusted local garage for £38. In future I'd be doing this rather than part worn.

A chunk out of the tread block won't automatically make it unsellable or unsafe. Especially seeing as on most newer tread designs anything outside the deep circumferential grooves isn't considered tread. They're designed to wear out "substantially before the main tread" (the bits with the depth indicators) and are often more than 1.6mm shallower than the main grooves when new.

Which is why you can often pass an MOT with the outer edges scrubbed bald even if the "bald bit" is more than 12.5% of the section width ;)

Just to be sure everyone is clear on the exact depth of tread on a new tyre - as my grandson was confused with this at the weekend.

A new summer tyre typically has 7.9mm or for those who still think in inches it's 10/32" which is the US standard tread depth.

NB it's NOT 8mm - but some off-road 4x4 type tyres may have considerably more.

If you're wondering why it's not 5/16th of an inch - it's because the good folks in the US of A have 2/32 as their minimum tread depth - which is the same as we Europeans have with 1.6mm

Apparently US brains can't accept more logical fractions or SI units.

Alternatively, they aren't so feeble that they feel the need to chase after continental Europe for the sake of looking 'kewl'.
