Car Insurance Advice

Options
Hi All
Im in need of some advice. MY son had a motor which he insured with co-op young drivers insurance. The policy was in my name as it worked out a lot cheaper and was the only way he could afford the insurance.
Late last year he had a minor knock and there was a small claim agianst the policy.
even though It was nothing to do with me would that affect the insurance on my main motor.

Thanks
Aaron

  • Just to clarify...

It was his car, but the insurance was in your name as the main driver?

If so, it might be worth looking up the word "fronting".

As it's your policy it has everything to do with you!

You must disclose the claim to all motor insurers you hold policies with, and disclose it when applying for quotes in future for cover. Insurers normally ask for your history over 3/5 years.

the car is registered to me also. it was specific young drivers insurance. And I was down as main driver and they had my date of birth so they knew I wasnt using the car.

I hope that's a mistake and you mean HE was down as main driver, otherwise it could have been a lot more costly.

I was down as main driver as it was the only way he could afford the insurance. Was still £1800. He was down as the second name driver. It has to be legit as it was a specific young drivers insurance and they had our dates of birth.

If he is the main driver then you need to put that. They could refuse to payout or reclaim any costs back from yourself and if they think you did it to defraud them then insurance will be very costly in the future.

While we all share the plight of young insurance costs, when you give false information the insurance can be invalidated.

As well as that you could be jailed !

Section 174 Road Traffic Act 1988

    (5) A person who makes a false statement ( no points when they have)or withholds any material information for the purpose of obtaining the issue—

(a)of a certificate of insurance or certificate of security under Part VI of this Act, or

    is guilty of an offence.

Max: Summary: 6 months or fine of £5000 or both

On Indictment: 2 years impr, or a fine or both.

Sorry to be brutal but If you can't insure the car then you can't drive.

I have a friend who thinks that not declaring endorsements is OK, it's just te same.

If you lied about the main driver then it wasn't legit.

i never lied about the main driver.
I was down as main driver and he was second named driver.
he had the accident and spoke to the insurance company.
there was never any attempt to mislead.
The confusing is in me being a little naive thinking it would affect my main car insurance as this was a specialist young drivers insurance.
