Last year i got quote through confuse and cheapest was around £870 through hasting direct.
I than went to hasting website and got new quote directly from them after clearing browser history and it came back at £746 for same details. i think comparison website charge insurance companys so they in turn charge us more.
Same with cashback websites as well. i got quote through them and difference was more than the cashback amount.

Hmm, interesting, i've just gone on the website of the two cheapest quotes and their quote direct is coming in just short of £100 more than it is on comparethemarket

i think it depends on insurance company, some would give you cheaper quote on comparison website to beat other compaines.
But as you have found out same insurance company would give 2 different quotes on same details. Its best to play around and go with the cheapest.

Some companies sell different products on aggregators than they do directly or at least change which optional extras are defaulted to being included and which arent.

99.9% of people buying from aggregators are highly price sensitive. They wont pay £1 to avoid switching or to go for an "ethical" brand etc. Therefore to get the sale you need your price to be as cheap as possible and so you cut out all the optional extras, could lower inner limits, cut out some of the lesser sections etc to get to the top of the chart.

When you are looking at people that are coming direct to your website they can be different types of people who may have a better sense of "value" rather than just "price".

I know one insurer that was doing work on changing the offer presented based on search terms used to find them. If someone searched for "cheap" then the optional extras default to excluded. If someone searched for "high end" then everything defaults to be included etc. Obv the customer can change the options afterwards but its about maximising your revenue when factoring in both conversion rate and average sale value.

Some companies have less sophisticated websites and may be willing to offer things direct a little cheaper than via aggregators as they dont have to pay Confused.com or such £50-£75 for the sale.

Do what Richard says and try all the links on there. I ended up with Tesco this year, cut my insurance by more than half. I got a cheap quote from them on one of the compare sites, then cheaper directly. If you haven't got a clubcard, get one they're free, they (claim) they gave me a 25% discount, but whatever the discount it was cheaper by far. Went from £51 p/m with Kwik fit to £23 p/m with Tesco over 11 months. Not sure why it was so cheap this year, cos tesco were nowhere near for me last year.
Re protected No claim discount, I didn't bother last year, hadn't had a claim for 10 years and it wasn't worth the price difference, but this years quote came with it so kept it in. You need to have a think about your voluntary excess as well - depends on your driving history, and your car I suppose, but a 51 plate Focus isn't going to be worth a lot, so whatever the excess, it would probably be a write off if in any accident of note, so you could probably go a bit higher than the standard - I think mine is £50 compulsory, and £100 voluntary, but not sure off the top of my head.
Suffice to say, its worth putting in the leg work as the savings are there to be made for even a few days of searching - I saved over £300, which I obviously had to give to my OH for some new curtains, doh/.

I did all the comparison sites, then looked for anyone doing good deals on Quidco. Can't recall off the top of my head who I'm with, but thanks to Quidco, I paid £188 fully comp with zero excess on a 2009 1.6 litre C'eed. Well chuffed with that!

Dont you use the TalkFord website? Try their insurers.

    Big thanks for that suggestion.

I come across a broker call Chris Knott Insurance on there, they've well and truly trumped all insurers, by slightly over £50!! :D

(all including interest for monthly payments)
    Last year price: £800
    Renewal quote: £750
    Comparison website: £500
    Chris Knott: £450

    :D

The other company may have beaten them on price. But im not sure about whether they are as good.

Had no issues with Chris Knott. Sisters had several claims with them and not had any issues.

    Hung up my suit!
I used a cashback site the past couple of years and Autonetinsurance on https://www.Imutual.co.uk got me a very good deal.

Possibly, weird thing is the lowest quote on comparethemarket went up by £12 when I clicked to go through to their website. Why is that?

Good to hear about your experiences with them. A couple of TalkFord threads also seem to have glowing references for them so they must be a good bunch.
