My husband knows but if I decide to get a DMP I won't tell anyone. Too ashamed.
  • Debt is nothing to be ashamed about. It's a by-product of the way the world has been adapted to live on credit since before the bust.

We're only human. It's just the sharks and leeches of the DCA world that want us to feel ashamed. And let's face it, half the monkeys that work for them are probably up to their eyeballs in their own debt anyway.

My family, boyfriend and friends know, I was actually talking to 2 friends tonight about it and we're all more or less in the same boat. I agree it's the nature of the world we live in - the have it now consumer culture and the throwaway society makes it very easy to want to take on debt. I think there's absolutely no shame in facing up to the problem and actively working on it though.
Debt: Started at £4780, now at £4190 :)

  • My DH and I are the only ones who know our true debt figure. Close family are aware that money is tight. Most other people will be aware that our income is reduced, but not that we have debts.

My ex partner, because we had joint debt that I couldn't pay. Also my ex partners family because he told them.

Anyone else gets the, that is not currently in my spending plan story, I'm recovering from some debt incurred when my income dropped significantly. And t hats all they tell get told. If good friends enquire I politely tell them I am able to pay all my bills I just don't have much left over at the moment..all true

Because of the role I was applying for at work I had to tell my boss, her boss and a couple of other people the level of my debt. It was difficult at first but then I found it a bit like therapy - I feel much more determined to beat it and I feel I have an awful lot of support now.

A problem shared is a problem halved. (unfortunately the debt isn't though...)

I buried my head in the sand for years. I think through shame really or trying to protect my pride. It got to the point where I was so stressed about debt it was effecting my personal life. It was only then that I talked about my debt to my other half and parents. What a weight off my shoulders!
