Right of return without a receipt

Did you deal with a manager at the shop?0

As you are claiming the product is defective rather than just a change of mind your rights are under the Sales of Goods Act rather than a stores return policy.
You are required to provide proof of purchase, the easiest way of doing this is with a receipt but as others have said there are other methods of doing this.
Under SOGA they are entitled to repair, replace or refund if the goods have been deemed to have been accepted. They can always offer gift vouchers but this isnt one of the prescribed remedies and so they cannot force you to accept them. If you are deemed not to have accepted the goods then you could reject them in which case a refund can be enforced.
Acceptance is often a matter of time and so this loops back to the proof of purchase issue to establish when you acquired the goods.0 -
how do they know you even bought it from them?0

Not sure where you get that idea from.
The OP purchased goods in a shop which were not of the quality expected.
You seem to be suggesting that rubbish stock can be sold as petfood and there is nothing the consumer can do about it.
Or have I misunderstood you?
But the OP has no proof of purchase, which is required for SoGA.0 -

That clause refers to 'returning' as in "The goods are OK but I've changed my mind'. Not if the goods are faulty.
But if the goods are faulty, the retailer is under no obligation to replace or refund without proof of purchase. No free lunch, and no free laptop

It would help if you quoted the clause you are referring to
