Don't tell YNAB but I agree with you about paying off the CC before building a buffer. As long as you have something tucked away for a rainy day that is.

I do both. I pay off everything in order of priority and anything left no matter how small gets put into the buffer. In a year, I've built a little over £1200 just with odds and ends here and there.

You must be very sure that you have anticipated all you can because there is no use pretending that MOTs and Tax for instance wont happen. The last thing you need is to have spent it all on debt repayments leaving you nothing to deal with those perennial issues that crop up meaning you end up reaching for the credit card again.

  • I agree Firewynn, it needs to be balanced, this program has helped me start to plan for Christmas (10 months away) car insurance and mot (11 months away!!) etc etc, previously all on the card as they were unexpected!! No point in using it and failing to plan for these 'unexpected' things.

Best of all though, i got it free today as i'm a student! Whoop!

I love ynab!! It helps me. See exactly how much I'm paying off my debts, save some for birthdays/car repairs and build a buffer for the unexpected costs us DFW hate so much!!! I get paid weekly so I update my budget with every pay check so I can work out which direct debits need paying that week etc. all my accounts are on budget apart from my loan. Every penny is budgeted and categorised!!!

    To summarise...... I LOVE YNAB!!!!

YNAB is given free to students, but dont worry, if you attend their online 'class' there is a chance you might win a copy for yourself as they offer them to each 'graduating' class.

I am a registered student:D I have an NUS Extra card and everything :rotfl: I am a part time student, but it seems to count for most things.

If I can get it free I will.

I believe you have to fill out a form and send them a scan of the card.

Thanks, I've emailed them to request a student licence. I am studying part time with OU but it seems to count for all other student discounts so fingers crossed it will count for a YNAB licence:beer:
