Internet Connection Stops

Hi, I have a problem maintaining my internet connection. My system details are as follows:
Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 and automatic updates
Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 Version 6.0.2.621 c with automatic updates
Netgear 108 Mbps Super Wireless ADSL Modem Router DG834GT (connected via Ethanet Cable)
Windows Firewall is off
No other security software.
The problem that I have is that after a period of time surfing the net, I loose my internet connection. The time can vary from a few minutes to about 30minutes before loosing connection. The connection can sometimes be restored by “pausing protection” on Kaspersky. However, sometimes I have to reboot the router and sometimes I have to reboot the computer. I have checked with Talktalk, my ISP, and they can not see any problems. Likewise, I checked with Netgear and they can not see any problems. I have recently carried out a complete system reinstall, but this has not made any difference. Since I have recently reinstalled the OS, I have very few programmes installed. I have a second hard drive where I store data which was left untouched during the system reinstall. No virus’s have been detected. I would appreciate some help.

I think the pertinent part is "I have checked with Talktalk, my ISP, and they can not see any problems". Doesn't surprise me.
Don't know how much you know about your router but check your logs for something like these messages:
Sun, 2007-07-15 00:35:49 - LCP down.
Sun, 2007-07-15 00:36:00 - Initialize LCP.
Sun, 2007-07-15 00:36:00 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sun, 2007-07-15 00:36:02 - CHAP authentication success
Sun, 2007-07-15 01:26:01 - LCP down.
Sun, 2007-07-15 01:26:02 - Initialize LCP.
Sun, 2007-07-15 01:26:02 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sun, 2007-07-15 01:27:03 - Initialize LCP.
Sun, 2007-07-15 01:27:03 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sun, 2007-07-15 01:27:04 - CHAP authentication success
They show the router having problems holding a connection.
Log in to your router by entering http://192.168.0.1 in your browser and entering username and password which if you haven't changed them will be admin and password . You can then navigate to your logs and router status pages.
Stats which will be handy are downstream attenuation, downstream margin, and connection speed which you can post back.
Typically if your noise margin drops to under 6 you will experience problems but post back your results.
Should say we want to eliminate the stuff which might be the problem on your side such as a dodgy filter or wiring and these stats will help, before we can blame talktalk.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
Hi decklan99,
I would describe myself as an advanced novice.
I have checked the logs but little info there. Probably I need to check it during / after I've had a problem. Current logs are
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:21 - Initialize LCP.
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:21 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:46 - CHAP authentication success
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:54 - Send out NTP request to time-g.netgear.com
Sat, 2007-07-14 20:09:44 - Receive NTP Reply from time-g.netgear.com
Sat, 2007-07-14 20:08:49 - Router start up

However, I did have a problem yesterday afternoon, but the logs do not cover that period. Will try changing the DSL filter.0 -
You say no virus were detected have you had a second opinion from an online anti virus company - you run KAspersky so why not try NOD32

Using McAfee here and I can confirm TalkTalk was disconnecting and reconnecting as you described throughout yesterday, problem seemed to fix itself after about 18:00. Nothing today and all seems to be fine. BTW there was also a slight speed slowdown during the 'blip' yesterday, again back up to normal today.
If the problem persists, try connecting using the TalkTalk provided ADSL modem straight to the phone line, if you can using another computer (laptop or similar) which will rule out any problems with your router or other computer.
But certainly TalkTalk is up fine today. Also, if you have TalkTalk home phone, call 0870 444 1820, option 3 then the option for internet faults, you'll get a recorded message advising of known faults. It's free to call from you TT landline.

Your stats look ok. Try routerstats from here http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm . It works with your router model and is simple to set up. You can plot a graph of your snr margin and see if there are any big drops, like when your landline is in use. I'm using it now to try and track down my problems with talktalk.
Also have a look here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/connectionprobs.htm for heaps of info. Here http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php if you want to tinker with your wiring.
I run linux so viruses not an issue, it's a talktalk issue.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
Heh, just had these while posting previous :
Sun, 2007-07-15 14:06:54 - LCP down.

Sun, 2007-07-15 14:06:55 - LCP is allowed to come up.

Is this wireless, is it encrypted, (if not, make sure you have a software firewall enabled, and then encrypt).
If it is wireless, you need to rule out wireless issues first.
then when it fails , try
start, run, cmd
ping 192.168.0.1
ping https://www.google.comEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks for all the replies. Replying in order posted:-
Reluctant_spender :- I ran the online virus check and nothing was detected.
patwa :- I can relate to your comments about Talktalk yesterday, it was fine all da, then early evening the problems started again. Exactly the same has happened today. fine all day then about 17:45 I lost the internet again. If the problem persists, I will try connecting the TalkTalk router.
decklan99 :- I have installed routerstats. About 30mins after starting recording, the internet failed again however, all of the graphs carried on at about the same level. I was expecting some of them to change drastically. After an hour or so of no connection to the internet, I decided to reboot the router. I also switched Kaspersky off until I had reconnected to the internet as this seems to help. During this time, the graphs all stayed fairly level. My wireless lap top could not connect either. But can't see why switching Kaspersky off would have any effect on my lap top as this does not have Kaspersky installed on it.
albertross :- The problem affects all my computers. The main desktop is connected via Ethanet cable, I have a second desktop and a laptop which connect wirelessly.
I pinged both sites while the connection was down via the Ethanet connected computer. 192 went OK first time but I had to do google twice. Packets sent 4 received 4 lost 0
I have screen shots if further info is required.
Any further ideas?0 -
The last thing I would try is this - http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
It's a tweak test hosted by dslreports0 -
so pinging google worked, but ie at the same time didn't?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
