We do have room for a second set. I always had a pirelli tyre which seemed to last for a lot of miles on my polo so don't mind spending on a second set for winter. It's definitely an option ill look in to. I suppose it would be 5 months of a winter set? November to march? Now what about engine on a 1 or 3 series BMW! !?.0

To re-cap you do 10000 miles a year and have a budget of up to 10K?
I would be looking at a late e46 3 series or an early e90 3 series.
The engine to go for is the M47 2 litre diesel - a fantastic work horse and pretty reliable.
I would not recommend the later (still current) N47 engine for 2 reasons:
1. They have DPFs which need regular long runs to enable the regeneration process. DPFs hate short journeys.
2. The N47 has a timing chain weakness - models prior to March 2011 are liable to have the chain snap, irrespective of how good maintenance it's had. Even post March 2011 crs can develop a noisy chain, although unlike to suffer a breakage.0 -
So, if I were to do less than 10k mileage a year would you recommend anything else?0

I'd be recommending a petrol engine.
Petrol cars are cheaper.
Petrol is cheaper (in the UK)
Under 10K the overall cost/mile is probably in a petrols favour.0 -
That's what I thought. Out of the cars I originally listed would you have any recommendations? Thank you.0

For no particular reason, other than I like the build quality, I would be seriously considering the Audi.0

Just a shame most BMW & Audi drivers seem to belong to a certain type of person starts in co ends in ck. if you like vw why not look at skoda or seat.
For me I'd stick with the polo for a couple more years and save the cash so you can replace by cash.
I do totally agree that the rubber that attaches you to the road is of massive importance. The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -
I presume you've ruled out the likes of Focus / Astra / Ce'ed / Auris etc?
I think if you're unsure which manufacturer you want to go for, the best thing to do is arrange for some test drives at dealerships. Car reviews and recommendations can get you so far but nothing only you know what your requirements are in terms of ride / controls / driving position etc.
Provided you have the time to spare, of course.
I agree with the others, petrol is the way to go for you."I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."0 -
Whats the 1.9tdi in?
Can/do you share cars?
Why not look at a complimentory car to the one you have
If the 1.9 is big enough and economical you can use that for your longer trips/ economy then the fuel in the other is less of an issue.
if you like the 1.9 grunt try a VAG 1.8 petrol based car0 -
On that list, the A3 or a BMW (I did read the part where it scares you, yet it is still the best drive).
My personal opinion.0
