New House

Afternoon all,

I've just bought a new house and need to sort out TV, phone and broadband.

I want to keep costs down, but I'm not sure what to go for. At the minute we have Virgin for all three but I'm not happy with the service I've had.

On a number of times we have had no TV or internet for very long periods, and since they launched the 'super fast' broadband mine has slowed down to a craw, so much so I can't stream music, movies, short films. The boy can't play his on line games. All I got from VM was ' have you reset you router'

anyhow, I can't decide if I should look at bundles like VM and Sky, or just look at a decent broadband offer and just have freeview. We don't watch a busting lot of telly, Sky sports mainly or something of Netflix. But I do Like some of the programmes Sky Atlantic broadcast, so any advise or deals you know about would be very welcome.

OSO

Sky Atlantic is only available on Sky, but if that's all you really need TV wise, it would be cheaper getting a Now TV box and entertainment pass.

You can also get a sports pass but they are expensive - currently £10 for one day- so if you watch a lot of sports on Sky it would be cheaper to get it through a package on Sky or Virgin rather than Now TV.
  • We do watch a lot of sport, but we only got SS last year as a joint b'day present, before that we just had the basic VM tv package, so its not a deal breaker.

I am tempted by the Plusnet Fibre package and just get a couple of Freeview boxes.

Is VM cable even available at the new property?
Since broadband is exchange-specific, start with an exchange search on samknows.com for your available LLU options.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I checked last night and VM is not available to me at the new house, but others are.

That's almost invariably the case with new builds.

So, broadband will have to be ADSL - you'll need a standard PSTN landline to carry that. Whoever you choose for installation will lock you in for at least 12 months and, with the exception of BT, you're likely to be tied to the same provider's broadband too.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

That's the thing its not a new build its over 120 years old!! So I don't understand why it wouldn't be available as its not in the middle of nowhere!!

Any how, I think I'm going for Plusnets fibre offer and going to buy soem freeview boxes.

If they advertised it as "new", you should have words with the seller. It's obviously not new!
  • It was not advertised as new, its new to me!

Only about 60% of UK houses are cabled for VM. They haven't done any serious network expansion since the Telewest/NTL era, the resultant debts of which are still being paid 20 years later.
