Showing my age here - I can remember the outrage when petrol hit the magical £1 per gallon mark :o Mind you, I can also remember when beer was significantly less than £1 a pint.

Haha, I remember petrol at 4/11 a gallon although the least I paid was 54p a gallon (12p a litre). Beer was 18p a pint at the time.

It's probably because they don't see it as a price decrease.

Like half price wine or Oakland furniture. Nobody ever buys it at full price.

It is this sort of smoke and mirrors pricing that has got the supermarkets in trouble (see Monday's Dispatches programme on Channel 4) you would think they might have learn't something by now.

Until Asda opened a petrol station in our area the local Tesco virtually had a monopoly, and corresponding high prices. They do not have a national pricing policy and say 'market conditions govern' ie 'what we can get we will in the absence of competition'. It was even cheaper to drive 8 - 10 mils to the next big towns Tesco for a fill up and still save.( My derv. car does 59 - 60 mpg on mixed rural/ town driving )
Thankfully we have now have an Asda and after years of being ripped off by the others I try to support Asda on principle.
Then Tesco's did its 2p off fuel for a £50 shop, except since then it has increased prices twice so it starts at 2.2p above Asda making Tesco fuel savings less worthwhile.
My attitude is mostly to ignore coupons, special offers, bogof's and similar gimicks, looking through them for what they are - a sprat to catch a mackerel - look closely as they often disguise an actual price increase.

:j luckily debt free except a very small mortgage. No other debts beyond each months spending and by using and paying the credit card in full each time my cash back reward is helping to balance the lack of interest on the currect account.
