Advice needed: lost phone, 2 months from end of contract

Options
Hello

I wondered if you lovely folks can offer some advice as I'm really not sure what to do. I have stupidly lost my phone.

Details are as follows:
I'm with Orange, on a 24 month contract with a Sony Xperia T phone (which I've lost).
I pay £32 a month for unlimited calls, texts and data.
I can upgrade my contract in 53 days, free of charge.
To get out of my contract early, it will cost me C. £76.
The mobile phone insurance I've been paying at £9.99 a month doesn't cover lost or stolen phones.
I have Tesco home insurance that covers mobile phones.
Orange are sending me out a replacement SIM free of charge.
Orange have blocked my lost mobile to avoid calls etc being made.

Questions are:
1. do I try to claim on my home insurance? (downside is it'll push up my premiums and I wanted a different phone).

OR:
2. Should I end my contract early and get a new phone and new contract (but potentially miss out on any retentions offers) and have to pay £76 for the honour.

OR:
3.Should I buy a £10 basic mobile phone to see me though these 53 days until I can upgrade without charge. The downside to this is that it is unlikely a cheap mobile phone will not have internet therefore I will be paying £32 a month contract for only texts and calls.

I'm in a quandary and would really appreciate your help. Obviously, if you can suggest any different options, that would be good also :)

Many thanks in advance,

Frankie Amore :)

    Buy a moto G
Ditch the phone insurance @ £10 a month (What a rip off)
When contract up switch to cheap sim only contract for ~10-15 a month.

I'd agree with the poster above, except get the mobile you want :)
  • Thanks for advice so far.

I should clarify, I have ended the insurance after realising what a waste of money! (It's Policy Admin Services who have their own 'special' thread on here too).

    OR
    4. Buy the mobile you want. Use it on the current contract until the minimum term ends. Cancel the contract. Switch to sim-only or PAYG.

Do you really need everything unlimited?

Hi Grumbler: I don't need everything unlimited - the only thing I do like to have is unlimited internet as I'm hyper connected (something I'm working on) but with unlimited internet tends to come unlimited text/calls.

So, consensus is, buy the phone I want and then switch to a sim only contract. Leave the home insurance well alone.

I shall consider what phone to purchase. I did want an Iphone but only because I appear to enjoy throwing my money on gadgets. I've had a look at the moto g on corf999 recommendation and it actually looks okay for the price. Other than an Iphone, I'd also been looking at HTC1 which is also v expensive so moto g looks like a possibility for me.

Thanks for all your advice :)
