Ordered a new car yesterday - can I get my deposit back if I've changed my mind?

The Old Boy was probably having a bu$$er them moment and decided to blow his money to stop it going to the family.
My mother bought a new car the other day she is in her 80's and if I had the cheek to suggest she wasn't compus mentis I would get clip around the ear. I have given up worrying, it is her money and if she wants blow it that is her prerogative.

My Dad bought himself a new Golf GTI last year at age 76 and at around the same time he was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer. Yes, he probably didn't need to buy a model that powerful, but it's his money and it means he can spin a mean 'doughnut' in the hospital car park when he goes for his chemotherapy if he wants0 -

He went in of his own accord, and if he has terminal cancer and therefore doesn't need a new car, surely that's his knowledge and not the dealerships? Do you think they're psychic?

Last time I checked, car dealers do not ask potential buyers to fill in a health questionaire before buying.
OP, not only he has no right in law to get the deposit back, but the dealer could in theory also sue him for breach of contract to recover the loss of profit on the sale.
The whole purpose of a deposit is to confirm that a binding contract has been agreed.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
After an irate phone call to Blackpool Honda and also one to Honda UK customer services - Blackpool Honda have now returned my fathers £200 deposit. It's a shame that they didn't take the same attitude with my elderly father as they did with me. Maybe because elderly people are seen as easy prey by unscrupulous car salesmen. They were quite rude to him when he asked for his deposit back - which is what annoyed me most of all. They waited until my mother was out of the way (she is very frail and had to return to the car) before pouncing on my father with the hard sales pitch.
The moral of the story is: 1) If you put a deposit down on a car, ask if the deposit is refundable if you change your mind within 48 hours.
2) If you do change your mind then contact the garage/dealer asap before they incur any expense with regard to the transaction.
3) If they have not incurred any expense then you are entitle to have your deposit back.
4) If they have incurred an expense eg., having a used car MOT'd - then they are entitled to keep that portion of the deposit which covers their expenses.
This is my understanding of the situation.0 -

But bear in mind that the very act of taking that deposit may well mean that they have incurred an expense.
There may be administration costs involved in receiving and processing that payment and again when it comes to refunding it.0 -
