Tesco Clubcard Plus problems

I've had one of these for quite a few years now. It's a clubcard that you can also spend money on. I used to pay £50 into the account monthly and could then spend that amount in store. It also gave me a £50 overdraft facility.

It couldn't be used anywhere except Tesco but the advantage was that you got double points if you used it. It could also be used JUST for points in the same way that a regular Clubcard can.

I have TRIED to stop using it to actually pay for the shopping, instead using it just for points and then paying by a different method. Instead I TRY to pay by Luma or Santander 123 cashbak cards. However, a lot of the staff don't know what to do with it and argue that I HAVE to pay and can't just put my points on it. Either that or they press the wrong button and I either have to pay on it or argue the toss, which isn't great when there's a big queue behind me. As I'm not crediting the account any more, when purchases are charged to it I go overdrawn. The interest rate isn't particularly high but I would prefer not to have to pay interest on it and instead get the cashback on one of my other credit cards.

The only way I can see of dealing with this is to either have the account permanently overdrawn up to its limit or to change it for a regular Clubcard. I even go to the extremes of picking which till I go to based on the fact that I have dealt with the same cashier before and they know what they're doing with the card.

Bit of a long moan but wondered if anyone else was having these problems and had found a way of dealing with it. I don't think they issue these cards any more, which probably partly explains why a lot of the staff don't know how to deal with it.

I would also be interested in hearing the opinions of any Tesco checkout staff who have had to deal with this.

Close it and may be open a Tesco current account instead.

Close down a card that gives you 1 point per pound and open one that gives you 0.25 per pound? Seems rather unnecessary...

If you're sure that you should be allowed to use it as just a clubcard then complain to Tesco or the store manager so they ensure the staff know how to process it.

I complained (via the Tesco Facebook team) that my local Tesco Express never gave out green clubcard points without being prompted, and now they always do (and I got 250 points to compensate for not getting them in the past!).

It closed to new customers many moons ago and is now a legacy product.

As I recall, you only get bonus points when paying directly with the Clubcard+ and not using it as a clubcard with other payment methods.

You could persevere or get another normal clubcard and join to the clubcard+ account for use with other payment methods. I suggest the key fob version.

    I still have one....

You can use it for points and pay by other methods.

when you scan the card you get a "do you want to pay with this card"

Select no and pay with a different card or cash, thats what I do.

The other option is just have no money on it then you can't pay with it.

Most of the time I use self scan even for small shops to avoid the queues and droids.

If going for a DTD I will use the regular tills.

I have 3 current accounts and don't need another one. I am thinking of closing it and asking for a regular Clubcard instead but a bit concerned in case I somehow lose my existing points.

I use it in more than one store and it seems to be a common problem. You can definitely use it as just a Clubcard. I have submitted an online query so will see what they say. Might have a look at the Facebook as well.

Yes, you're right about the bonus points. As I now use either my Luma card (which gives 4% cashback) or my Santander 123 (which gives 1% cashback), I don't think there's any advantage in the bonus points. The only thing is the fact that you can get 4 times value when you cash them in for certain vouchers, which would trump the 123 card, which I use when I've had my full month's cashback earnings from Luma.

Can I get a normal Clubcard in my name for the same Clubcard account?

This is why I don't understand why the staff have such difficulty with it. I don't like using self scan tills but may start doing it when I only have a few items.

Even if I have no money on it it will still go through if the staff press the wrong button. There is a £50 overdraft facility on it,which it will use. I don't want to leave it permanently overdrawn by £50 as I will then be charged interest, albeit by a small amount.

I've had one for years too and I still think it's a good option so I keep on using it. I've experienced the same problem as you a couple of times but the staff in my local Tesco are well trained and 99% of the time they get it right. As these cards require a signature it amuses me that most of the younger members of staff don't check the signature and it annoys me that some don't have a pen. Hopefully you will persevere and the staff in your branch will get the procedure right.

True, but the OP has an overdraft facility so he would pay interest if he did this.

    Yes you can.
I have several different clubcards tied to the same account.
You can do so by calling them or online.

They do struggle to find a pen! I specifically said I didn't want to pay on it yesterday but it went through and it was more hassle than it was worth to get them to reverse it. The lad on the till gave up looking for a pen so I didn't even sign. I suppose I could dispute the transaction when I get my statement, by saying that I didn't authorise the purchase, but again more hassle than it's worth.

There's about 3 stores where I use it fairly regularly and it's pretty much hit and miss whether the person on the till knows what to do with it.

    Yes I do.
I have two different regular clubcards I also have the clubcard credit card. They were all tied automatically to my account.

If you have an online tesco account go here
    http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/
log into your club card account and you will see on the left hand side an option "view my cards" that lists all the clubcards linked to your account.
It states that if a card is not listed to call them on 0800 591 688 or
    0330 123 1688 to add it.
As I say mine were automatically tied to my account.
