Ford Focus Estate 02
We are in desperate need to buy another car, our old faithful Mondeo has given up on its transmission, but it is a 20 year old car.
We've seen a Ford Focus Estate 1.8TDCi Ghia, 130,000 mileage, diesel, manual, 5 gear, asking price £1,200 private sale. It's got a little bit of rust around one of the back wheel arch and a little bit of rust around the boot door handle. The interior is pretty good and the engine for a diesel sounds ok, a bit noisy after a petrol car, but that's what I expected.
Our Mondeo 2 engine is petrol and very economical, well it was until the transmission gave up.
Opinion please on the Ford Focus Estate cars and and if you think this price for this age is a good deal.

How old is the focus?0

The year is 2002
The focus has rust, of what you can see, last thing you want is to MOT it to find it needs welding in these area's you cant see. lower inner sill near prescribed anchor point for seatbelt and rear subframe requiring welding, suspension tower.
1.8 tdi is good engine in the focus but at 130k you could be looking at some expensive repairs in the near future such as turbo seals going, clutch etc (avoid any 1.6tdi), its the body shell around it that's the issue they rust just as good as ford KA and once its set in theres not stopping it and it will be a common failure on the MOT every year.
I would say get the box and clutch done on the mondeo, drive it use but also youll be in a better position come to part ex it.0 -
I bought an O2 plate Focus Diesel Estate, about 3 years ago.
It had around 180,000 miles on it, and ran OK.
Spent about £400 in repairs and servicing, although I did the servicing myself, so saved quite a bit that way.
I parted with it in October last year, with nearly 240,000 miles on it.
It was still running, but the transmission was rather noisy.
I paid £750 for it, 3 years ago, so £1,200 now seems a bit high.

The Mondeo is 20 years old and we've been told a new transmission will cost around £700, it's an automatic, that's not including fitting and we have no idea where to get a used gear box from, the other problem with that is, would the used gear box have the same problem and how much would a used gear box, including fitting for an automatic cost? The car is worth about £100, but apart from the transmission and there are no other problems, she has been a wonderful car and has served us well for the past two years, she cost us £450.0 -

My advice.
Find another fitter.
Do you have any mechanically minded friends/relatives, who could do the job for you?0 -
