Switching to ADSL

Hi

I have been with Telewest for years and now it's Virgin I am thinking of switching as the great deal i got is nearly over and the negotiations others have had look awful in comparison. I bought a Freeview PVR just to get rid of any reliance on the TV service

If I set up a phone line with BT - what's the deal with getting BB with another provider - not LLU particularly

I noticed most charge an activation fee of about £50 if not switching? Does it make sense to have a 12 month contract with BT to start with then? I may go for Option 1 if so

Thanks

Broadband is like everything else, you pay for what you get. Go for the cheapest and if/when problems do arise they take an age to sort out, pay a bit more and get a better service. I have a bit of a sideline doing BB installs in my local area, I will only recommend 2 providers, BT because they offer not too bad a deal and you can normally get through to someone on the phone and their kit is not too bad.

The other is Zen, No discounts, have to pay for connection and buy your own router, but they only have 1 month contracts and their customer service and tech support is very good, as is their quality of service.

I have dealt with most of the other providers (I admit I only normally get involved when people have problems so my view is biased somewhat) and they are all a right pain to deal with, passing you from pillar to post and not wanting to take responsibility for anything.

So don't just choose on price - for the sake of a couple of pounds a year take a close look at service!!!

Yes thanks - i am already thinking of either of those or someone like Be who seem to also have overall 4 star ratings

OK - so basically when i get a phone line - it needs to get set up for BB at the exchange only is it?? Or does something need to be done at my house in this activation process to allow the line here to receive both telephone and BB? How long does it take to get activated - ignoring the other ISPs who may delay

Also have you generally found the Home Hub to be a waste of space? I can just go with BTs wired Modem and add a wireless router
  • Have a look here at Thinkbroadband - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/

Thay have a compare function as well as an active forum lsting the vast majority of ISP's.

The feedback there is direct but helpful.
