I cannot use them.. I cannot hold in a trigger to maintain power.. they are also heavy so I can't hold them for long.. I got one for the little spillages and cant use it.. have RA in my hands too.

I have a Black & Decker handheld vacuum cleaner:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Decker-Dustbuster-Handheld-Cleaner/dp/B004XCFHYU

It works brilliantly, and has over 400 reviews on Amazon.

Also costs a lot less than a Dyson.

P.S. It has an on /off power switch so no trigger to hold down when using it.

Thanks. I have had a look and it does get good reviews. However, prefer to have a couple of tools to use. Came across this which could be a front runner as so much cheaper than the Dyson

I have one, with bone problems, and I manage fine with it. Mine is lightweight, in my opinion, but I was used to lugging a Dyson upright around before. Mine doesn't cut out, I even accidentally washed the entire thing under the tap now (with the battery and motor etc in place) and it dried out in a day and was fine...!

Mine is ideal for me, in a flat with 2 adults and 2 cats, and it is great for the skirting boards, car etc.

I really like mine but I agree with others, including Pigpen, that it would probably be hard to maintain power and they will be heavy if you have RA. I know because I have a relative with RA and they can't really use it well.

PC World/Currys have them on display to try out.

A very important point. My good hand (right) is still quite strong but my left hand not so good. Will keep this in mind.

I have a condition like arthritis that gives me joint pain; I can't use the handheld Dyson because I can't hold the trigger long enough due to the pain in my hands/fingers. But I also get pain if I type or knit for more than 10-20 minutes as my hands are quite bad at the moment. However the pain from using the Dyson occured much quicker as you do have to put quite a bit of pressure to keep it turned on!

I wouldn't do anything that may make your arthritis worse if there is another alternative that you could use instead. I bought a different handheld vacuum :)

I have the pivot Black and Decker Vacuum which I just use for small bits/quick cleans when I don't want to get my big Dyson out, I like it as it folds up to make it very small.

However it is not nearly as good as a big upright Dyson- for the stairs I use a mini turbine brush head on my Dyson, just clicked onto the end of the hose which reaches up my stairs when the Dyson is sat at the bottom.

I use my Black & Decker pivot on my stairs without any problems at all. And I have a dog who has white fur ....

I also use it for quick clean ups, corners, the car, window sills etc.

However, it is definitely not a replacement for a normal vacuum and I wouldn't use it to clean the lounge carpet - I use my lovely Miele for that, whilst the Dyson animal gathers dust in the shed ;)

This looks like a lovely machine :D Almost tempted to get one myself, except my current B&D Pivot is still going strong :money:

Thanks to everyone who gave advice. I have gone for the Black and Decker above as I really cannot justify paying so much more for the Dyson.
