Student ID Card

My daughter will be 16 on 1st sept and still in fulll time education - through to 18!
She does have a part time job.

but how does she get a student id card?

The school she attends doesn't issue them and everyone I have looked at incurs a charge!

whenever she shops she is often frustrated that the shops she uses offer student discount - on the production of a student id card - no particular type apparently.

Given that she will be in full time education (government choice) till she is 18 shouldn't she also gain the benefits of being a student.

It's enough that she is still classed as a child in some places but she buys adult clothes (which have tax added to them), she has to buy books for school! (which have tax added to them).

It's the same for my 14yr old son.

when I was a child in the 80s children clothes were just that - we didn't have to buy adults clothes or shoes - it seems they are making children clothing and footwear smaller nowadays to cash in!

Anyway enough of the rant - any ideas where we can get a "free" student id card?

TIA

  • I think when shops say they accept student id it's university students they mean, not under 18's at school/college.

When it comes to Student ID, a lot of places will only accept an "official" ID issued directly by a college or Uni - Many places gave-up on NUS and ISIC cards a long time ago due to the numbers of "students" signing-up with fake dates of birth in order to use them for buying booze or to try and get into pubs and clubs.

Some local authorities have their own ID schemes, so may be worth having a look on their website. In Derbyshire we have the B-line scheme, which is distributed via the Senior Schools.

Student discount is for degree level students, so usually 18+. This is why her school/college dont provide the cards

I can't answer your question, but I suspect your memory may be playing you up if you think you were still wearing children's clothes at the age of 16 in the 1980s, I imagine if your mum had tried to get you to wear anything designed for a child you would have had a major tantrum!

I have an official NUS card from the website and it cost me £12- you can get them from the age of 16. They are strict with getting them though and you have to provide various pieces of info plus they're sent directly to the school/college to ensure that you are who you say you are. I know when I was at college when I was younger they had quite a racket going in asking what date of birth you wanted on them but it's all changed now. And I can't say I've ever had my NUS card refused for student discount. I'm an Open University student so I don't have official Uni ID as such and nowhere has ever questioned it- and I use mine a lot.

Clarks school shoes go up to size 9 for girls and 10 for boys.

There are alot more cheaper adult clothes available now than there were in the 80s and most teens wouldn't be seen dead in childrens clothing.

Mandatory education until 18? When did that come in?

If the school doesn't provide ID cards for students then the only option is to purchase an NUS Extra (or associate) card, and get the app to see a full list of retailers offering discount
