As we are not mind readers, could you perhaps mention what car it is?

Could be lock, latch, switch, motor, wiring, etc..

One of my back doors doesnt lock, but thats because the drivers door lock is faulty and not giving off the correct signal.

Door not properly shut. Give it a good slam.

Otherwise as above. Locking motor itself. Wiring. etc...

    Will it lock manually?

I will get in before anyone else does and say its probably French and its a
feature to allow you to run away faster.

The near side back door will close, it just will not lock. I know something is wrong, because when I activate the lock using the key, the car makes a odd noise. I use a button to lock the doors.

I have not tried locking the doors manually because it is quite fiddle.

Yes I think I need to get someone to have a look at these electrics for me. I had a bag and some cds pinch over nite, so clearly theres a security issue.

I was wondering if this was a commen fault

So use a search engine to find out. A quick check found a few threads on various sites, one that I looked at seems like it could be similar to your problem, although there was no definite resolution to that one.

Try over on the nissan note owners club.

The noisy central locking is caused by the locks being made by renault, so they fall apart inside, make a buzzing noise and stop locking.

If you search on there for noisy locking, there is a fix that involves great dexterity to replace the pin that falls out, or a new lock is about £120.

None make and model specific bangernomics answer: Tie it shut with the seatbelt.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

That is what we did in The Olden Days with Triumph Heralds, as the passenger door used to come open on right hand bends :D

Good job inertia reel seatbelts hadn't been invented ;)

Depending on the lock mechanism and system, I'd say a good 9/10 these issues are caused by microswitch failures.

Had that problem with my Jag. A few years ago. Cured it with a squirt of de seizing fluid down the lock button on the window sill... No problem since.
