Long haul flying with a 1 year old

Hi
I was hoping someone could advise me.
I'm trying to find a good deal for a long haul holiday to South Africa and we'll be travelling with our 1 year old.
The thing that confuses me is when I search certain sites such as Kayak even though I specify we have a 1 yr old it still seems to quote the price for 3 adults.
Can anyone advise if certain airlines charge full price for a 1 year old?
Secondly is there a good airline to fly with (bearing in mind we might be flying in-directly as cannot afford direct flights to South Africa) as I'm a bit worried about holding a 1 yr old in lap for the duration of a long haul flight even if we have a stopover .
Thanks in advance any help and tips would be much appreciated

This is quite interesting http://traveling-kids.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/flying-with-infant-airline-policies-for.html although some of it might have changedPosts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

If the child is on your lap, I seem to remember that you don't pay for a ticket (although I think we paid tax). If you want your child to have a seat, then you usually pay a child's ticket price (much lower than adult price) but that may depend on the airline. We use BA mostly.Debts 2004: £6000..............................................Aug 2007: £0!!!!0

Also, I'd personally consider having a separate seat for the child (unless they are very clingy and will be on your lap anyway!) due to the increased risk of DVT in legs when you're sitting with a heavy weight on your legs for a long period of time. I say this from experience
