Online shopping with Mastercard Debit

Hello all,

I have a very quick (and probably silly) question. I have a current account with Dankse Bank and recently they switched from supplying you a Maestro card to a Debit Mastercard one. Now I'm not very knoweledgeable about these things but I know of Maestro being (or had been) the brand for Mastercard's debit cards (and Mastercard branding was on credit cards). But on online sites (Amazon, paypal etc) when adding a card, there is no option to select the card type as "Debit Mastercard", only Maestro (which I am used to selecting) or Mastercard.

So what should I be selecting as the card type? I presume it should me Mastercard now - I don't even know if it matters - but I just wanted to make sure.....

I wondered about this when ordering from Tesco using a Metrobank Mastercard debit card. I chose "Mastercard" and that was accepted.

I have ordered from Amazon using a (Yorkshire bank) Mastercard debit card. Mastercard was selected on the Amazon site and shows on the "manage payments screen" as
MasterCard/EuroCard.

Yes, I don't know why but Visa selection nearly always seems to offer a choice of debit or credit, but Mastercard rarely does. However, I think most sites (or perhaps Mastercard themselves) then check the card PAN so that it's recognised as the correct type so that you pay debit or credit charges if any apply.

This is because how the individual companies like to brand their cards. MasterCard doesn't like to differentiate the brands of credit and debit very much, on Debit MasterCard receipts it'll usually show just MasterCard, not Debit MasterCard. Visa prefers to separate out all their products, although you could select any of them and they'd all work.

You're right, I'd never noticed it before. All of my Visa cards say either Debit or Credit on them, whereas neither of my Mastercard credit cards say anything (although my Mastercard debit card from Metrobank says Debit twice!).

Metrobank must be customising the chip name on its card. Barclaycard do this on its cards so the receipt and terminal will say BarclayCard Amex or Visa Credit (network depending of course) on all chip transactions.

Every network has its own rules though. American Express cards issued by Amex themselves always say American Express or Corporate American Express on the receipt, whereas it'll always say Amex on Amex cards issued by third party banks like Lloyds, TSB, MBNA, Barclays etc.

I think one of us is misunderstanding, I was talking about what's actually printed on the card. I have no idea what the chip contains, I tend to only use the credit cards with C&P and what it says in the terminal doesn't really register with me beyond amount, PIN OK and Please remove card.

As it does with debit MasterCard, UK versions start 5573.

It only really matters where retailers don't accept a card type or charge differently. Retailers will automatically be charged correctly by their card processor.
