My wife is about to replace her 'hand me down' iPhone 3 (from our daughter) with a new model when her existing contract expires next week.

She has never downloaded a film or song in her life and probably never will, so would a low memory 4GB phone be OK ?

She doesn't really know what this memory is for (not do I) but does have a few apps on her existing phone.

Is this memory for songs only, or would the number of apps be limited too, with a lower spec model.

thank you

I think you mean Flash storage and if yes then the Iphone 3g/3gs (which ever she hands down to your daughter) 4gb will be dependent on what you she wants to download. normally that is not much for kids (again dependent on age) as kids songs (500 i think) and couples apps will take it to the 4gb.

Plus you do not actually get 4gb as the software pre installed will take up some space.

Yes, I refer to the flash memory

Her current deal was a SIM only deal, as she was given the old phone (iPhone3) from our eldest daughter, who bought a 4 last year, but has now changed to a Samsung. Our other daughter got the old iPhone 4 leaving my wife with the 3, now over two years old and with battery problems.

That's why she is after a new phone deal, rather than just a SIM only

Do they take lots of photo's?

A family member phoned me the other day sayiing their phone is saying its low on memory. Turns out they took hundreds of pictures whilst on holiday recently.

Add that to the 2 years worth of photo's still left on the phone from previous trips. It soon adds up.

So not just apps and music and downloads.

Flash memory also as said includes the OS . I would suggest 8MB as the minimum .

Why don't you check on her existing phone how much memory she has used: how much for apps, data etc?
All the info you need is on there.

You mentioned a new phone with new contract. iPhone 5s and 5c have a minimum 16gb and iPhone 4s has 8gb

You cannot get a new Apple iPhone with 4gb

If she has been fine on a iPhone 3 any will be fine however as has been said check what she has. The iPhone 3g and 3gs both had 8gb minimum memory too

Memory is used for everything. It's not dedicated to photos or songs or apps so you can't run out of memory in one area.

Last thought is the iPhone 6 (or whatever it's called ) is probably going to be announced in September. Historically Apple have supported three iphone products back so the iPhone 4s may be discontinued when the 6 announced or it may be the 5sor 5c will be discontinued or changed. 4s's will not stop working but if Apple don't give it software updates then apps may no longer be written or updated for the 4s.
Apple has said it will get iOS 8. But not how fast it will be or what future updates there will be.

Another plan is to keep the phone and switch to a sim only contract and decide in a few moths after apples iphone announcements.

Most phones these days are coming out with 16-32 GB internal storage. 4 GB is very small but if you only use it for calls and texts you might get by.

8GB will be enough based on what you have said.
