Dress arrived with large electronic tag affixed

Any ideas for removing those large electronic tags from clothing? I've bought a dress from a business seller on ebay and its arrived with the tag fixed to it. I don't really want the hassle of sending it back to them to be removed and waiting for it to be returned.

I did have the passing thought that maybe it had been shoplifted  but looking at their feedback they have 100% and have a 'shop' plus its not a current season item so I think its simply a genuine error.

Have you emailed the seller yet?
Might be worth asking; if they are a shop you never know, they might offer to send a free replacement.
Maybe send them a photo of the tag?
  • No I haven't contacted them yet as I was going to try and sort it myself, I keep looking at a hammer and thinking shall I but I don't want to damage the dress.

Email the seller. I'm sure they will be more than happy to resolve their mistake, that's how people keep their good seller rating, let them help you out.

No. Don't do this - you'd get ink everywhere and the seller would not be able to help you. Email the seller, return the dress, they will be more than happy to resolve the problem for you.
  • I didn't realise there was ink in the tag! Thanks for that. Looks like I will have to return it and wait for a replacement.

Not all tags have in them.
However, they are really hard to get off (obviously).
I had one on a pair of shorts once (not sure how I got out of the shop without setting off the alarm!).
I needed them for holidays, and didn't have time to go back to the shop, so my oh tried to pull it off, but it left a big hole :( (luckily under a picket flap tho, so not too visible).

Most high street stores will be able to remove it and you may be able to get one of them to remove it if you know any helpful staff in them. I once bought a dress in the Disney Store and only noticed several days later that the tag was still on it. To save going out of my way to get back to the store I asked a cashier in Tesco where I'm a regular customer if she could remove it and she did.

Remember to contact the seller through the "Other" option when sending a message otherwise it will open a dispute case. Keeps the seller onside.

They are easy to remove, Got a magnet? Look on youtube bound to be clips on removing them.

Wife bought some of the Genie Bra's from ASDA when they were on offer. Boxes were all sealed so thought nothing of them.
When she opened the boxes every single one had tags attached.

I cut one open with a knife and peeled it back with pliers and saw how it
worked. Then removed the rest with magnets.

It really depends on the tag. Some have ink. Some don't. I have removed a number of electronic items from clothes. I sometimes get stock that have come originally from UK high street stores legally through third party sellers. Occasionally they have forgotten to remove the tag.

As well as the ink, just to warn you that some have a charge in them. When the tag is broken they go off. It won't hurt you but does burn a hole in the clothes.

I have found the best way is to basically crush the plastic bit on one side of it. Once you have it broken into bits you can dismantle it. Although I am getting good at it, I can still not doing it without leaving a small hole.

Just to warn you that when I first came across a tag I looked on Google to see how to remove. There was a suggestion of going into stores. However as you can imagine taking an item with a tag on and no receipt to prove you brought it there is not well received by shop staff. As I have found you can legally get hold of clothes that the tag is still on but shop staff are unlikely to believe you.

Personally I would return the item for a full refund. It is not your problem. The seller has either seen this and hoped they can get away with it. Or they have not checked the item first before checking it. Either way it is unlikely you can remove it without damaging it. Unless you can find shop staff to take pity on you (they would also need to use the same tags that are on the item) then it will be a lot of hardwork to sort out.
