OP, please find a decent, recommended, local garage to look after your car. From your postings you really need friendly, professional help.

I do have a friendly local garage who service my car, but thought this was something that could be easily fixed. Turned out it was:)

I am not irresponsible with my car maintenance like some people on here seem to be suggesting - I take safety very seriously. However, I am not fanatical and do not check everything on a weekly basis.

I recognise that comment was aimed at me, and I'm sorry if you consider my statement in an earlier post harsh, but your brake lights are vitally important if you want to be as safe as possible.

I'm not suggesting you need to be 'fanatical', but is a weekly check of your brake lights against a wall really that hard or too much to ask for your and others' safety?

I'm afraid that stating that your brake lights could have been faulty 'for months', which perhaps you need reminding isn't only unsafe, but also illegal, does strike me as irresponsible. At what point do unsafe and illegal actions cross the borderline between responsible and irresponsible? Speeding? Mobile whilst driving? Having a few beers before your drive? Or just some dodgy bulbs?

Checking bulbs, fluids and tyres weekly is not "fanatical". It is - or should be - a bare minimum. Saying "Well, the brake light might not have been working for months, and only got noticed by chance <shrug>" is not taking safety "very seriously". Sorry, but...

    Agreed.......

I check my daily runner/barge more often than most people check their PAJ.

Check my brake lights every day, check my rear lights any night that I drive. Not because I'm fanatical, because when I reverse around the corned of my drive, there's a window directly at light level.

Reverse, look in rearview mirror, see working lights, drive off.. takes less than 10 seconds for the whole procedure!

I'll check my front lights and fog lights about once a week.

Sorry if you think it was aimed at you, I can assure that it was not aimed at anyone in particular. I had forgotten who actually scolded me in the first place:)

I suppose I don't check these things as regularly as I probably should because the farthest I drive is 6.5 miles to work each day.

Must say that I have checked the brake lights about four times today, so paranoia has set in. Also I don't think it could have been faulty for months as undoubtedly somebody at work would have told me.

    Dodgy connection = bad connection.
On the earth side of the component = bad earth connection.

Nothing scary or complicated about that, is there?

No but most people don't know the difference and people are always quick to randomly suggest that it is a bad earth without having a clue or even seeing it.

Also, to identify that you needed to stuff the connector with silver foil, you presumably had to do a certain amount of investigation. Not quite 'ripping out wiring looms', but a similar process. I can't see what your objection is.

Yes I did.. I started with the connector and noticed that when putting pressure on it, the lights worked. I thus concluded that something was not right here, took a look inside the connector and saw a metal contact was not right.

As for the wiring looms comment, I've never suggested that people look at that - I just merely pointed out that others do.
