Another problem with Ford KA:(
One of the rear brake lights isn't working, so of course thought it was just the bulb, but no:mad: OH changed the bulb but it still isn't working. It might have been like this for months, it was only because I had reversed in that OH noticed it.
Very strange because all of the other lights on that side are OK, just the brake light. If I take it to a garage it could cost a fortune trying to locate an electrical fault.
Please, any suggestions really appreciated.
Many thanks.

Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

Check whether the brake lights are earthed separately first, I doubt it but I'm not familiar with KA rearlights.
On another note, personally I find the 'it could have been that way for months and I've not noticed' attitude frankly shocking. It's lack of care and maintenance like that which is behind half the questions we see on this board. It takes minutes to check your brake lights.0 -
Jesus steady on fella. Do you walk around your car with a clipboard and checklist every morning?0

No, but every time I park I reverse my car in, and can visually check the brake lights at that time using the wall behind, garage door, reflection in other car window etc.
I do check fluids, tyres, lights at least once a week. It must take me all of ten minutes.
I'd rather that than find out my brake lights aren't working when a 44 tonner ploughs into me.0 -
Have you fitted the correct bulb, most older cars have double contact stop and tail light bulbs and many newer cars have single contact bulbs with separate stop and tail lamps. The bulb holders are different as the double contact bulbs have offset pegs but the bulb can still be forced in. Try comparing the bulb on the other side, the new bulb could also be faulty.0

And, frankly, they're the most important lights on a car.
I'm sure I'm not the only one to have pulled up next to somebody at lights and pointed out they have one - or more, even all - brake lights not working. The number of people who either react aggressively or with absolute indifference is shocking.0 -
Take out the opposite break light bulb and make sure it looks the same as your new one, unfortunately often when you go into an auto shop you don't necessarily get what you have actually asked for.
If the bulb is the same use the bulb you know works and it put it in the other side, this will determine whether there is actually a small fault with wiring etc. If the bulbs are different, take the original with you when buying a new one, or use it as a guide to buy online.
You need to check your lights more often, what if your only fog light isn't working and someone rear ends you because they can't see you? What if your only reversing light isn't working? They are all easy to check, if you are on your own you can put a brick or something heavy on the break pedal to see if your break lights are working. Its good to get into a routine of checking lights, tyre pressure, oil level, wiper fluid etc. The more you know your car the quicker you will identify a problem beginning, important in all cars, but it gets even more important as our cars become older.0 -

I actually stopped next to a woman in a reasonably recent Citroen C1 the other week specifically to point out that NONE of her brake lights were working. She argued that because her car had been serviced recently that I must be wrong and refused to believe me or even check. When I pointed out the car seat in the back, six inches from where the truck/van/car might plough into it, she got even more angry and told me not to bring her f**king kids into it.
I hope she doesn't find she lives to regret not listening.0 -

No, I don't think there was any drama in my statement. I said I found the lack of care shocking, which I do.
I also said that half the posts on this board come as a result of lack of care and maintenance. OK, maybe that was an exaggeration. Perhaps it's only 25%.0
