    I've been Money Tipped!
So... Me and my boyfriend have decided to get engaged, yahoo, we haven't got a big budget. We're looking to spend no more than £500 really :/. I really want a ring with shoulder stones and preferably silver, can't seem to find any silver engagement rings though. Has anyone else had any joy at the jewellery quarter with a tiny budget?

Any help or advise would be very much appreciated :)

    Thanks

Not sure about silver in the jewellery quarter, they will be very accommodating for white gold. We've been to Bicknells, but try a few. If you're relatively local they will happily check the settings and re-dip them every year (or more often?) if you just pop in.

I got mine from neweys (only place I go to for jewellery and I live in scotland) we spent £900 and got a lovely diamond in platinum, I had it valued recently, it was worth considerably more than £900

I've had a white gold wedding and engagement ring - the wedding ring is 15 years old today and the engagement ring is 17 years old and they are both still untarnished.

It's worth bearing in mind that valuations usually only give the replacement value... what you would have to pay to replace it. If you wanted to sell, you would very likely be offered a fraction of the replacement value.

The bargains on Ebay are a testament to this.

Last year I had an 18ct gold ring made for me in the Birmingham jewellery quarter for about £350, using a diamond given to me from my mother, and also got £50 for the value of the gold in the original ring.

Do you have any family members who have jewellery lying around unused because it's unloved/old fashioned, who would be prepared to gift or sell to you? You could even find pieces at auction for little money that could be utilised for their stones.

I got a ring that would cost about £1400 new, from a ring that had been in a dusty box since the early 1970's...

I also would have love platinum but due to budgets went for palladium and am very happy with my choice.

Remember to plan ahead too, your wedding ring should be made of the same material as your engagement ring so that one doesn't wear on the other.

Jewellery quarter is an excellent idea. There are plenty of manufacturing jewellers there who will make something to your specifications and budget. Make sure you are dealing with a business that actually makes on the premises, some are very small businesses.

As for the metal, have you considered palladium? Better than silver, cheaper than platinum, and it is now required to be hallmarked. Several places there will manufacture palladium rings for you.

Well I would love platinum but that's not going to happen and I don't what white gold because of it tarnishing. I'll look in to silversmiths, thanks :)

White gold does not tarnish, silver does though.

I can recommend Stone Jewellery in Warstone Mews, they have silver rings as well as the usual gold and platinum. It often isn't the price of the metal that you need to consider but the price of the stone itself - go for the best quality that you can afford.

Here's a link to the Jewellery Quarter magazine with a list of the jewellers in the Quarter together with their contact details.
  • We only spent £475.00 on my ring, but I could not be happier with it. Makes me smile all the time, we also went to Birmingham jewellery quarter as well. x
