Engagement ring from Birmingham jewellery quarter

So... Me and my boyfriend have decided to get engaged, yahoo, we haven't got a big budget. We're looking to spend no more than £500 really :/. I really want a ring with shoulder stones and preferably silver, can't seem to find any silver engagement rings though. Has anyone else had any joy at the jewellery quarter with a tiny budget?

Any help or advise would be very much appreciated :)

Thanks

Have you looked on Etsy? Lots of beautiful silver stuff there :)

Budgets are relative... £500 to some is nothing, to others is fantastic. It's not the budget that matters but the intention and symbolism of the ring that's important.

Are you sure you want silver? If you are then £500 is very do-able... It'll be the stones that take up the budget... what have you got in mind?

Are there any local silversmiths near you? They might be able to make something to order for you.

The jewellery quarters tend to be geared up to the gold market... and particularly the higher carat gold.

A local independent might be more willing to assist with something unique.

    Congratulations, by the way.

  • Well I would love platinum but that's not going to happen and I don't what white gold because of it tarnishing. I'll look in to silversmiths, thanks :)

Silver tarnishes too and it's fiddly to get into the setting of claw set pieces to clean them. I'd consider a rub over (bezel) setting to make it more durable.

Exciting times... what stone are you interested in?

    Congratulations!

It's often mentioned on here, but Betts Metal Sales gets a +1 from me as well. I'm in the process of ordering rings through them, and they've been exceptionally helpful - to the point that they're making us bespoke wedding rings to a specific design.

I'm miles away so I've dealt with them by phone and email, but their sales department are extremely helpful (drop them a line via their website), and will work to any budget.

You say you want platinum but don't have the budget? Betts do palladium (which is what we're going for) and they also do argentinium, which is a new metal that's slightly harder wearing than silver but is very light (they sent me an argentinium and a palladium blank to try for size and shape).

PM me if you want more information and I can give you the name of the lady I'm dealing with there.

Sizing can be a problem, but it could if you are prepared to look at secondhand rings.

    For example...

My wedding ring is white gold and hasn't tarnished after 7 years.

I think jewellers can clean white gold if it does tarnish.

    Hi Neptune

I can't advise about silver - I got a white gold ring from there and I would say it tarnishes slower than my silver jewellery. I haven;t had to get it redone yet and i've had it over two years.

Birmingham jewellery quarter have loads to choose from. They are also open to haggling so bear that in mind.

Check when their opening hours are though - I think a lot are closed on a strange day - might be a Monday.

White gold can be re-dipped if it is tarnished.
