Not sure if this has been mentioned, forgive me for not reading back, but sunlight activates them on me, I try and keep a lip balm (stick) with a high spf in my bag/pocket if I am out walking/cycling/gardening etc.

Yep, me too. I have spf lip balm to hand at all times :). Think i was about 18 when i learnt that lesson, 1st 'sunshine' holiday i'd ever been on, & i ended up with my worst outbreak to date. All over my lips & surrounding area, horrendous wasn't the word

If you are sensitive to the sun re coldsores, take Lyseine before and during holidays, it does offer protection - DH always got coldsores on hols and he doesn't when he takes the Lyseine.

this has definitelly worked for me in the past, but not this time. i've been taking 1000mg of daily lysine since my last one in July, but i think i'm so run down with other stuff at the moment, even that's not helped this time.

i increase my lysine to 4 times a day during one, at least for the 1st 2-3 days. i'm using my light therapy every 2 hours at the moment & i think it's this that makes the most difference. i paid less than £20 for my current one, even if they were £100, it would be money well spent! amazing gadget :T

If you are sensitive to the sun use a sunblock on your face and lips. This has worked all summer for me then one day I sat outside talking and forgot the sunblock. Hence one giant coldsore on my top lip. I dont think anything really cures them once they break out. 10 days or so and they are gone until next time.

Its an advert - not an article.

And even in the ADVERT - the only scientific 'evidence' they state is to a completely different problem!!!! (Malignant melenoma)

I wouldn't be rushing out to buy this!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

agreed, but i really do think that the light gizmo's can speed up healing. my current one came up overnight on Saturday/Sunday, this is the start of day 4 & it's completely flat & just red now. being wholly on the lip, they do tend to heal a little quicker anyway, but even the last one i had above my top lip (which have previously taken nearly 2 weeks to get to the flat skin/redness stage when not using the light) was ok to be covered with concealer within 6-7 days.

this is the boots one, reviews are similar to what i've found (wish i was one of the lucky ones that could stop these at the tingle, never happened yet! :( ).

A GP friend once mentioned that viruses don't survive in cold so use an ice cube several times per day. I don't know if it works but it makes sense. She reckoned the acyclovir in most remedies is much too dilute to do much.

  • As soon as I feel the tingle of a cold sore coming on, I apply coconut oil. Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides and has antifungal/antibacterial/antiviral properties. It is able to penetrate lipid coated viruses/bacteria (which herpes simplex is).

As soon as you feel the tingle, apply coconut oil (virgin, cold pressed) with a cotton bud to the area every hour. It's also a good idea to consume coconut oil too as the benefits are far better when you take it internally as well as applying externally.

I totally agree about the light gizmo, I even take mine on holiday with me. I had cold sores from pre-teens until 50+, going through a really bad phase of multiple sores until I was diagnosed and treated for illness. Now I get hardly any (the light is supposed to prevent them from returning on a previous site) and it really speeds up their demise:rotfl:

For me, what would be the tingle stage, always seems to happen at night and I first notice the begining of the blasted think when washing my face:(
