Gorgeous George, for a look at the future in the UK see Criticism of Wal-Mart and compare with Criticism of Tesco. Wal-Mart is further along the road that Tesco is travelling down.

I do think that it's possible for Tesco to proceed without causing enough fuss to hurt longer term growth but I doubt that there's the will to accept the need to back off more often at the higher levels of the company. Perhaps I'll be surprised, though. There's certainly no shortage of capable people there and perhaps the experience of having to be the smaller player under Wal-Mart in the US will help them to appreciate how to reduce the feather ruffling effects.
