Time for new tyres...

I have a Peugeot 307 (54 reg) and I'm thinking it's about time I get the tyres changed. I've owned the car about a year now. Although I don't do the greatest amount of mileage - probably about 7-8,000 a year - I do use the motorway a lot as I hop on it for 2 junctions to get to work. Last thing I want is a tyre to go on me on the motorway!

One tyre is nearing the mark in terms of tread so definitely needs to be replaced soon.

I noticed earlier that one of the others has a small part of the rubber chipped out (it can't have been like it for too long, I check them when I do the tyre pressures every few weeks or so, it's likely from where I caught the kerb the other day :o )

What is a reasonable price to pay for new tyres? And is part worn a reasonable option to reduce costs or would I be looking at paying out more in the long run?

I paid about £75-80 a corner last time, and they were about the cheapest I could pay and get a decent brand. These were 205/55/R16s, so you may pay different amounts depending on the size.
TBH, just remember that the tyres are the only point of contact you have with the road. I'd never compromise on tyres if I were you. Go part-worn if you like, just make sure the tyre itself is from a decent brand.

Tire size would be needed to answer that

You need to know the tyre size to get an idea of price. It will be shown on the wall of the tyre. Then google for "tyres", you'll find any number of online sites where you can enter the tyre size and get prices. Depending on the make, they'll vary quite a lot in price. Most sites will have useful info about each brand - e.g. this one is particularly long lasting, that one is good in the wet, the other one is very sticky in the dry, etc.

Alternatively, when you know your tyre size, you can just phone up a local supplier and ask them for their prices.

I always feel that part worns are false economy - they'll be cheaper, but won't last as long. They're a good idea if you're going to sell the car soon, but if you're keeping it then I wouldn't bother

Buy online with a local fitting option. Much cheaper than the usual routes such as KwikFit.
I've used Black Circles a couple of times, but there are several others offering local fitting.
Tyres are one thing I really would not skimp on in terms of brand or quality. The budget brands often result in longer stopping distances and poorer wet weather traction.

Plug your reg in on the black circles website (but make sure that corresponds to the tyre size you actually have)

They rate tyres by noise, wear and economy from memory.

I would agree. Most part worns have 5mm of tread or less.

Bearing in mind a tyre has 8mm when brand new, and you really want to be changing at 3mm, then its only got 40% of its useful life remaining.

Its also worth checking the age of a tyre - more than 4 years old and its probably not something you want to be putting on - most part worn sellers wont be volunteering this information, for obvious reasons.

As above, cost of tyres will depend on size.

Look to mid-range brands such as Kumho and Hankook. Good performance and excellent value.

As a side note, replace your tyres on pairs across an axle.

With regards to the 'chipped' tyre - should be ok unless the cords underneath are visible.

Thanks for all the useful replies guys. I'm gonna check out that black circles website. I've not heard of them before.

On the tyres I have it says: 195/65H15.

Just as a point of reference I typed in my car info to the Kwik Fit website. It's giving me a range of tyres from £49 to £63 per tyre, fitted and including VAT. This is the only website I've looked at so far. But has led me to another question. Apparently all the ones it has shown me are summer tyres. I obviously want my car to be safe in the wet/cold/ice when winter comes. Will summer tyres cut the mustard?

Sorry for coming across as a fool - I can actually do a number of small car related things. I'm not completely useless. But when it comes to things like the tyres - as others have mentioned this is the only point of contact with the road - I need to make sure I'm safe.

Having recently moved I need to find a garage I trust nearby. There is a kwik fit nearby, but trying to avoid the likes of kwik fit and halfords. I have found another garage that a neighbour recommended. I'm actually going to see them next week for them to sort out my air con. If I feel like they've done a decent job at a decent cost I'll ask them about the tyres. If I feel like they've ripped me off, then it'll be back to the drawing board in terms of finding a garage.

Not always, I'm scouring the web for the best deals on tyres for one of the fleet and kwik-fit is the cheapest!!! Usually I use mytyres, camskill etc with local fitting. To say I'm shocked is an understatement.

    Cheers
